Full frame vs non full frame

The question is about Full frame cameras against the other DSLRs.

I would like to know what the difference in coverage a full frame camera has using a standard lens against an ordinary DSLR using a wide angle lens. That is subject to taking the same picture obviously.

Also having the ability to "stitch" pictures together surely does away with the need for FF camera anyway.

I would have thought, never having used an FF camera, that there would not have been that much difference. Can somebody help me out here.

Re: Full frame vs non full frame

Sorry but that doesn't answer the question I have already seen it. It doesn't cover anything about using a wide angle lens. With the greatest respect may I ask that you re read my question.

quote " I would like to know what the difference in coverage a full frame camera has using a standard lens against an ordinary DSLR using a wide angle lens. That is subject to taking the same picture obviously " unquote

That article is about crop factor, something entirely different to my question.

Re: Full frame vs non full frame

Are you asking what the difference in the angle of view is or what the difference in effective focal length is.

If it's the focal length then for Canon a 24mm lens on a full frame is 24mm but on a smaller frame camera it acts as a 38.4mm which is a big difference.

I certainly notice the difference when I swop a 24mm from the 5D to the 40D

Angle of view with a 24mm mounted on a full frame equals about 74 degrees, For a cropped sensor the same lens gives an angle of view of 50 degrees. Very noticeable!

Re: Full frame vs non full frame

Sorry again Steve it appears that my question is being misunderstood. I am on about a (((( WIDE )))) angle lens on a "c" sensor camera against an FF camera using an ordinary lens. What is the coverage difference? may explain my question better .

Surely a 12mm lens on an ordinary camera would have a greater width of view than say a lens of around 70mm on a FF camera. In which case I can't really see the reason for full frame cameras.

Ok I may be a bit thick on this which is why I asked.

Re: Full frame vs non full frame

OK

A 14mm lens (wide angle) on a "C" sensor camera gives an angle of view of of 78 degrees

A 50mm lens (standard) on a full sensor camera gives an angle of view of 39 degrees.

So you would only see half as much of the scene with FF 50mm combo than you would with a "C" 14mm combo.

Re: Full frame vs non full frame

A wide angle lens (10mm for eg) on cropped sensor COULD give you a wider shot than a standard lens on a full frame camera.

Seems a strange comparison though.

Re: Full frame vs non full frame

AH that is what I wanted to know, thank you. Now the next question ( being a pain arn't I?) is why bother to go FF then. What is the advantage?
