Hi everyone, Sorry I havent posted much recently, I have been busy with other things and feel I have neglected my photography recently. I last took these pics and would like to know what you think of them. They are of my kitten Zeb.

Re: Zeb

What a gorgeous kitten! I like them all - but for me the first is the best - it has a lovely clarity to it, though so do the others! I love the eyes in number 3... My bit of advice for these is take care to make sure you're not chopping the ears in half etc. It's fine to crop right down - but for me it never looks quite right if the tips are removed or halved etc.

Lovely effort though - and thank you for sharing your gorgeous kitten with us!

Re: Zeb

Thanks for your opinion Zoundz, I haven't cropped any of those pics but did get a bit to close (poor Zeb lol) I agree with you though - lesson to learn, don't get to close the subject

Thank you Dawn, I think he is beautiful too

Re: Zeb

Hi lil things, good to see you back.

I agree with the others, the 1st picture for me is also the best.
I don't mind however, if you've cut off half an ear, or there is part of an ear missing, as long as what you're left with still manages to convey to the viewer, what it was that made you take the picture in the first place, and of course, that the subject ( cat ) is still recognizable, despite it having parts of it's ears out of frame.
Picture 1 is a perfect example of this.

But the reason I think picture 1 " works " and the others don't, is because there seems to be a lot more natural light used to take the shot, which is why any shadows are much softer than the stark, bold shadows you get when you point a flash straight at the subject, as is the case with pictures 2 and 3.
You also have more depth to your shot in picture 1, as opposed to pictures 2 & 3, and that depth helps to bring your subject right out, in a more natural way, unlike 2 & 3 where the cat pops out from the background unnaturally due to the harsh shadows caused by the flash.

Does this make any sense??

Basically....try not to shoot your subject against a flat background, especially if your only pointing a flash straight at it and not using any other fill lights.

Try and use natural light where possible, it's already diffused enough to give you nice, soft, natural shadows.

Try and give your images a little depth, as you have done in image 1.

Don't worry about the cropping, but I generally shoot a little wider than I intend my final image to be, that way I can crop the picture later for the best framing.

Cute cat by the way.
