Re: St Monans sea wall

Interesting way of showing perspective, makes a change from the usual going directly into the distance by the zig zagging of the wall.
This is purely a very personal thing I have but I don't like making water look like cream from long exposures. Yes I know its the "done" artistic thing nowadays and nearly every photo with moving water is done this way, its just I prefer to see how it should be as seen with the eye.Maybe I am too much of a purist.
Of course I do realise that by getting enough light onto the sensor this could be the only way of getting the shot which would explain things

Apart from that its a great shot and( apart from my personal choice) I do like it a lot

Re: St Monans sea wall

I like this and think the long exposure with a filter has led to very pleasing results. Beautifully sharp, nicely composed and a gorgeous sky. I would be very interested to know the set up and settings you used as I have just purchased a 10 stop filter and would like to try for some shots like this. Was it manual focus about a third of the way in to get the overall sharpness.

Hi Bazza.
Thank you for your comment. As you say all water seems to be shot with a 10 stop filter, I do love milky water, but I may go back and try without the filter to see what I get. Cheers you have given me somthing to think on.

Hi Richardf.
This was taken with my 7D and my 17-40L lens
Set at 19mm, F13, at 30 seconds. I focust about 1/3 of the way into the image and set the lens to manual focus and attached the filter and gave it
30 seconds of exposure.

I have a table that I made if you would like me to post it. It gives the times without the fiter and the time with the filter fitted it takes the guess work out of the calculation, It works very well.

All you have to do is print it off and laminate it keep it in your bag its easy to use.

Hi Richardf.
Here is the conversion table I made for the 10 stop filter. As you can see it is quite easy to use.
Focus on the subject without the filter and take the shutter speed and apature, set the lens to manual and fit the filter set the camera to bulb and look at the chart,
if its 1/4 of a second without the filter, fit the filter and the speed you would set would be 4min 16s. you need to keep the apature the same as the reading without the filter. You could also set the camera to AV mode and set the apature to say F22 and take the shutter speed without the filter and convert it.
Hope this helps
Cheers
