Re: Nikon D200 or Canon 40D

Bearing in mind that the canon is the newer version than the nikon.

Likes weight- why- because I think a heavier camera can be held steadier.
Diaopitic range in viewfinder as normally have to wear glasses for reading.
Think the pictures it takes have a more true to life colour
Easy command buttons/features not having to dive into menu for everything
Used to layout after upgrade from D70s.
Wouldn't part with it but keep as second backup if I upgraded again
Enough features to keep one happy for every picture
High shutter speed 8000/sec

Just to name a few

Dislikes Heavy demand on battery ( corrected in D300) spares cheap from China
Getting used to the additional features takes time ( still learning)
Being so careful about getting dust on sensor.

Like any make of camera it depends on what you used to which has a big deciding factor.

Re: Nikon D200 or Canon 40D

Thanks Bazza

Nikon D200 - Battery life I'd heard about (I'd get a grip), Weighs a ton - That I like, commands just seem natural after my D50, true to life colour, dust a pain.

Re: Nikon D200 or Canon 40D

Phil

The answer is to try out both makes in a shop and see which you prefer, as I said before the Canon you asked about is a new version out against a 3 year old version of the Nikon. On a like for like basis between the 2 you asked about, I would come down on the side of Canon, purely for the dust cleaning feature.

If you asked me which I would choose between the Nikon D300 and the Canon 40D which are more equal to each other I would opt for the Nikon D300.

Excluding price difference.

Re: Nikon D200 or Canon 40D

Cheers - D300 is SO tempting and I know it's progress but then I guess we could consider the Canon 5d

Phil

One has to set a price limit and a well known high street store is selling the D300 for under £1000 with a down payment " interest free for a year" and balance at the end of year which makes it lighter on the pocket. Friend of mine has just bought his D300 like that and he is over the moon with it.

But I'd still have to get myself a lens on top of that cost.

Re: Nikon D200 or Canon 40D

I have the 40D wouldnt swap it for the world, I love everything about it, and the sensor cleaning and live view are the things Nikon have pinched for their D300, Canon leads the way....!!

I know Bazza speaks truthful about getting dust in the D200, not him but he knows of someone that has had real issues with one, perhaps not entirely the cameras fault, but none the less, its worth knowing that if you get dust anywhere inside your Canon, Canon will clean it FREE for you once while the camera is under warrenty. I think Nikon wanted something like £200+?

The cameras, like for like are similar, the Nikon is heavier, the zoom features on the Nikon screen are not easy, needing both hands to operate it, the canon is easier, but hey, thats no real BIG deal, but its messy. Personal choice really like everything else. Both decent machines and I would expect you'd be pleased with either.

If the D300 is back in the running that would be my choice

Here's what KenRockwell.com has to say about them:

Quote:
Nikon D300

The best camera for serious amateur photographers is the new Nikon D300 ($1,800). It does the same thing as the D40, just more of it with more weight and far more expense.

Honestly, though, the D300 offers much faster firing rates for sports. I'd get the Nikon 18-200mm VR lens with it (about $700). I love the 18-200mm VR because it does everything well in one lens; every other Nikon lens works well on the D300, too.

The Nikon D300 handles much faster than the Canon 5D below. Get the D300 if you shoot sports, people, news and action. If you work on a tripod and/or with subjects that can hold reasonably still, like portraits and theater, used properly, the Canon 5D has extraordinary image quality better than the D300 and at least on par with my $5,000 Nikon D3.

Canon 5D

For careful landscapes and portraits, I prefer my Canon 5D (about $2,100). I most often use a Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 L II (about $1,300) or 17-40mm f/4 L (about $650) lens, or a Canon 70-200mm f/4 L (about $1,000) with it. Most or all these lenses are on rebate in the USA until 17 February 2008.

Nikon 55-200mm VR

Re: Nikon D200 or Canon 40D

I never had any trouble with dust really. So at the moment, a dust reduction system wouldn't pull me away from Nikon.

Re: Nikon D200 or Canon 40D

Think you'll find Ken Rockwell is a "Nikon" man, his comparisons have often beenn said to be slightly "biased" towards Nikon to say the least! He remionds me of a particular 4x4 magazine that always rates Land Rover the best!!
