Think I've made my mind up about a new camera.

After a lot of swithering I think I've decided on the Nikon D200.

I think.

What were you deciding between?

The D200 is one of my favourite cameras! Whenever I am looking at pics taken with certain lens, the pics I like most seem to have nearly always be taken with the D200!
Kit 1
Nikon D300
Nikon 55-200mm VR
Kit 2
Nikon D40
Nikon 18-55mm

Well I'd been considering upgrading from a D50 to a D80 but now the D300 is out the D200 looks like its going to be available at a price that makes me think it's a better buy than the D80.

Having said that If I go for the D200 then I quite like the Canon 40D

Likewise, If I was going for the D80 then the new Canon 450D is worth a look.

Oh and the new Sony Alpha range

Oh and.......

Re: Think I've made my mind up about a new camera.

Hi Phil, as you know I recently bought a Sony Alpha a700 rather than the Canon 40D. Some people thought I was crazy, but I have to tell you, I've been really pleased with the results so far, and I've even shown it to some friends of mine who are professional newspaper snappers, most of whom are Canon and Nikon owners, and they were really impressed, not only with the dimensions, style and layout of the camera, but with the quality of the images it took.
As a Sony owner, I'd certainly recommend at least looking into the New Sony range before making my mind up, although I have to say, when I went into a certain high street retailer to enquire about the A700, the salesman was practically shoving the Canon 40D down my throat. It took me about 40 minutes to convince him, that I wasn't interested and would much prefer the Sony. It was only when he put my new Sony kit in the bag that I noticed all the Canon boxes stacked from floor to ceiling, and there was even a huge Canon advert right across the bag!
Hmmmmm.....I wonder why he was so desperate to sell me the Canon????

Good luck with your choice. I'm sure once you get to hold it, you'll know which camera is right for you!

Re: Think I've made my mind up about a new camera.

Hi Phil,

After a recent upgrade myself from a D50, i decided to stay with Nikon. I had a look at the canon... and the menu system and feel of the camera was too different to the nikon for my liking... It might have been a good camera, but it wasnt for me.

The D80 was at the top end of my budget, so the d200 wasn't even in the picture...

If you're interested in seeing if it's worth paying the difference in price there's a few links (although some quite biased) if you google "d80 vs d200".

http://www.slrtoday.com/articles/133...200/Page1.html

I'm sure the price difference for the kits are around £300-£350.
To me it looks like you're paying extra for a bit more build quality and a few features that you may or may not use...

Maybe consider a D80 and spend the extra you would have spent on the d200 on an additional lens or flash(depending on the type of pic you take)? the extra £300 should get a nice one

That's actually what I'm thinking about. I agree feature wise thay they are similar and yes there's a difference in build quality and weight. What I do like about the D200 is the larger size though.

I guess it all boils down to how much I'm prepared to spend.

Re: Think I've made my mind up about a new camera.

Phil - there is £50 cashback for D80 lens kits right now! Or £75 back for dual lens kit packages!

However I would say it might be worth waiting a few days to see what the Sony A350 is going to be like. Super Steady shot, 14MP _and_ cheaper than the D80... could be a hot contender! Only thing is you'd need to consider your current lens.
