Your favourite lens... and why!?

Not just any you own - but any you would you like to get too, and why?

I'll go first

I currently do everything with my Nikkor 18-200 mm VR, its a very good lens. Obviously not pro level but a very good all rounder. It allows for flexibility when you go out for a shoot, with there being no need to change for landscape or telephoto stuff. Even though it is only a f5.6 at 200mm the VR system is excellent and the Nikon claim of shooting 4 stops slower is as far as I cam fathom a reasonable 1. I'm getting sharp shots even at 1/30th at 200mm when it's a little dark.

If you are after an all rounder I couldn't recommend this any higher, I am very happy with the results and would say its well worth the money.

The next lens I'm after is the Nikkor 70-200mm 2.8 VR, a mate has one and it is awesome no other word for it, however I have my new macbook pro to pay for and then the 70-200 will be mine, if I can get hold of one!!!

Id love to get the 70-200mm as i have a summer job in the pipline covering hrse shows and events and this would be ideal!

I also want the 85mm 1.4 prime for my studio work. Then the Sigma 10-22mm just for fun!

Blimey the Nikkor 70-200 costs over a grand!

What's so great about it? What kind of photography is it best suited to?

Only having one lens, my fave is the 18-55 kit lens - I have been very impressed with it!

I'd have to do more research into what other lens I'd really really like to get. At the mo it's the 55-200 or 70-300 (vr versions) but am always open to what else is out there

The 70-200mm is pro level glass, and for the stuff I like to shoot like animals it will allow faster shutter speeds at lower light and get sharper results. Also it allows the use of a teleconverter to extend the focal length and still give a decent aperture to get faster moving subjects. It's also a cracking lens for portrait work and weddings and the like allowing you to shoot the action from a little further away. Not to mention that the build quality is a lot better and the lens is a lot tougher.

Got a mate who is a sports tog and covers RL and also premiership and he only uses 2.8's, can't get the shots with anything else with the conditions he shoots in.

As for your choices Azz I can recommend the 55-200 it is a cracker and I was more than happy with mine and got good results. I'd never touch a non VR telephoto ever again!!!

Hubby has the Canon 70-200mm and it is lovely ..my favourite that I own is the Canon 24-105mm EF and the 60mm EFS both fab

Not sure which lens I want next ..am still getting used to the new ones

I was looking at pbase last night and really liked the pics taken with the 55-200, and lots of them were with the D40... so it looks like that will be my next lens

Azz 90% of the photos I have posted on here are taken with the 55-200 (the none VR) and I'm made up with it! I got it as a second lens in a deal, but if I was buying the lens now I think I would go for the VR! as I throw around 70% of my images due to slight blur as a result of not having a VR lens!

Thanks Finbar! Yeah I think the VR one would be a good choice as it's only an extra tenner or so..

I adore mine, unfortunately it is still away at the lens hospital
