Balvaird Castle - First Play with new lens

I went over to Elcho Castle today as I knew it would be great for trying out some wide angle shots but it was closed

The B plan saw me head home and walk up to Balvaird Castle. Being plonked right on top of the hill it's a bit tricky to photograph especially when the wind blows like it did today.

Despite not really seeing any 'high impact' wide angle opportunities I decided to just try out the Sigma 10-20mm lens regardless and on the whole I'm pretty pleased with the image quality.

Great work! I really love the dramatic images, wide angle lenses produce.

I really like the unusual composition of the last shot

It certainly is strange

If I was shooting with the sun at my back and trying to include close foreground objects, I'd end up with my shadow in the shot.

I also noticed that vertical perspective (building walls for example) can either narrow towards to the top (as your eye expects) or widen at the top (which is strange) depending on the angle of the camera and where the building is placed within the frame.

Re: Balvaird Castle - First Play with new lens

I'm looking at getting something wide (17mm - ??) so am interested in your shots. Could you tell me if they were all taken from the widest setting of the lens or intermediate focal lengths. I tried to look at the Exif data but it is missing.

Cheers

Steve

By the way, great shots. Looks like you had a great day to try it out.

I'll double check the exif for you when I get home. Most of them are taken at distance so even if they were fully open the 'wide' effect isn't maximised.
