Adding to what Laura said Cakey, Cormorants are Shags larger relatives and they are both part of the Pelican family

Re: Some more birds...

Cormorants have sometimes been persecuted by fishermen because of the belief that they eat huge quantities of fish, especially in rivers where they were supposed to prefer young salmon and trout. However, research has shown that cormorants seem to favour flat fish and eels, taking only small amounts of the more saleable fish.
Seems harsh if they shoot them thinking they are going to eat all the lakes stock of fish....Shows how ignorant man can still be......

Re: Some more birds...

Absolutely! And in any case I think it's appalling to kill another creature who fishes for food, so that you can fish for sport!

Re: Some more birds...

man is not ignorant when he sits fishing all day and sees what 100 breeding pairs can do to a fishery
one man last year lost £130,000 of silver fish in 3 months remembering that this is living and was allowed to do nothing ,now even the RSPB say there are to many

Re: Some more birds...

Sorry - this is a debate that could get very out of hand rather quickly, and this is meant to be a thread for some of my bird photography - so I'd rather this subject not be discussed. I will never agree - the cormorants have a 'divine' right to eat the fish, some might say - and quite frankly, I don't care if a handful of fishermen miss out on their catch - and if someone's living is so badly impacted by the wildlife... you know what? Find a different living, don't murder animals so you can carry on your merry way. Also he appears to be making enough money on it to be able to lose that amount...
