Re: Gulls and Terns

That's also a way to ID yes - but sometimes shadows can fool you I've seen Arctic that were nearly impossible to tell apart from Common - then you notice that the legs are much shorter Also, the cheek patch is whiter and more marked in an Arctic.

Hope you can see these without logging in?

Common:

Side by side it shows some of the differences well I think

Re: Gulls and Terns

I do agree with shadows fooling you sometimes. No time is it ever easy IDing them. But the two images you have on FB show the differences nicely.

Re: Gulls and Terns

Your tern is defiantly a Common tern, Artics can display varying degrees of black on the bill depending on time of year.

Arctic terns have much shorter legs, and the tail streamers are longer than Common terns.

There are other differences depending on age and flight shots. A fine set of images.

Re: Gulls and Terns

Thanks Brian I cannot ever recall seeing any Arctic Terns. I may of done but not realized so. The beaks colour differs from what i have seen from other photos. Lighter in common. I still know if you had them flying side by side maybe a couple 100 yards away i would not be able to tell the difference. Thanks for the info about legs too
