Off camera flash problems.

Not sure if this is the right place for this but here goes.

I have a canon 450D and a Speedlite 430EX II and have bought a Nissin SC-01 off camera cord which I thought would allow off camera use in conjunction with a Hama bracket for macro and red eye avoidance for portraits. (I would have liked the Canon bracket but not at £120-00)

My problem is that the camera/flash won't communicate via the cord. Flash setting menu says non-compatible flash of flash switched off so you cannot get in to set things up and the flash won't fire.

Mounted on the hotshoe, no problems, does all it's stuff perfectly.

The flash cord states it is compatible with Canon ETTL.

Am I doing something wrong or do you think it is a duff cord???

Any help and advice greatly appreciated as it is baffling me and at £60-00 it's an expensive key chain if it doesn't work.

Re: Off camera flash problems.

According to the blurb it is compatible with both the camera and the flash, which both being canon EOS kit are compatible with each other.
I chose it specifically as it was the only one that said it would do ETTL, Canons own lead does not.

It does not fire the flash at all on any setting I have tried, but as the camera won't talk to it, thats not many.

It's got me beat.

Re: Off camera flash problems.

I thought I read that the Speedlite 430EX II cannot be remote fired? but I'm not sure.

Re: Off camera flash problems.

I just did a quick good and this is someones review of the flash

Quote:
It comes with a great carry bag and stand, although it cannot be used off camera unless you have another on the camera to fire it. The sensor seems very good and in automatic produces great results.
not concrete evidence but maybe a clue?

Re: Off camera flash problems.

Sounds plausible.

Anyone want to buy a Nissin SC-01 remote cable???

Re: Off camera flash problems.

I would suggest contacting Kenro who distribute the Nissin brand. They can be contacted though here http://www.kenro.co.uk/contact.php.

I can see no reason why this should not work with your flash unless it is a faulty unit. The site does say it is fully compatible and after all, it is only an extension cable.

I would suspect a function either on the flash or in the camera is the culprit.

Re: Off camera flash problems.

Thank you for that Steve, and others.

Its only a few wires and contacts which pick up the signal from the hotshoe and transfer it to the flash.

It should work. Unless some little robot has not blobbed the solder in the right place? , or as is more likely, somebody isnt doing his bit properly, errm, that would be me.
