Macro Tuition - Worth Pursuing

Hi all,

For a while now i have been thinking of offering tuition in macro photography. I get asked alot how i achieve the results i do and how people struggle to get decent images and how frustrating it is.

Although 90% of my photography is done with Canons MPe-65 macro lens a highly specalized lens capable of shots up to x5 life size i feel my experience would help people shooting with standard 1:1 lenses.

I have taken one person out a couple of years ago who was struggling with their MPe and had never had it off a tripod, after a couple of hours early one morning she was taking images handheld which were a vast improvement over anything else she had produced so far and left with a renewed interest in the lens.

I have never advertised the fact that i would offer tuition before and i would be interested to hear your thoughts on wether this would be of interest to people if it was available.

Thanks,

Alistair.

Re: Macro Tuition - Worth Pursuing

Well if anybody has the know how when it comes to macro photography then it has to be you. Your work just speaks for itself. Offering tuition is a great idea. Personally i think as your work is so good people would snap at the chance of having you tutor them.

Macro is something i want to get into properly in future, i have not got the funds for a decent macro lens and definitely not the MPe65. Although if i had to get a macro lens then this would be the one. And as they always say, you get what you pay for, well what you pay for the MPe65 and what you get is worth every penny.
I currently use Kodaks Close up/Macro screw on lenses, cost a whopping £12. They are okay for a beginner but like you say it can be frustrating.
Anyway, good luck Alistair if you manage to go ahead with your tuition

If it's free and you are will to travel it's definitely a good deal. I'd be interested in that

I bought a Canon 60mm macro a few months back. I'm looking forward to the bugs and insects coming out to see what I can do with it.
Just so you know in advance I will be picking your at your brain on how I can improve

Re: Macro Tuition - Worth Pursuing

I badly want that lens - sadly I have Nikon gear. Hopefully one day I will be able to afford the lens and a camera body to put it on! XD

I think if you offered tuition, your books would never be empty. I'd love to have a lesson or two from you (except for the sea in the way!) - if you ever visit Ireland, I could probably set you up a talk at the camera club(s) here, and would be *awesome* to go out looking for Ruby Tailed Wasps with you A girl can dream!

I've loved your work for ages now, so I reckon you should go for it!

Re: Macro Tuition - Worth Pursuing

I think you'd get a good response if you tried.

I had the MP-E 65mm (albeit briefly) and know how tricky it is to use. First time using it I struggled to even find the objects in the viewfinder LOL
