African wild dog

These guys came close to the lodge yesterday….

Portrait of a killer…they are very efficient hunters (with a much higher success rate than lion)

Being little and skinny they rely on stamina, tenacity and razor sharp teeth to bring down prey as large as buffalo

Similar to wolves, they have well defined social hierarchy which is constantly reinforced by dominance and submissive gestures, serious fights are rare.

But in many ways their behavior is reminiscent of domestic dogs…..

…especially when the pups play

There are no official records of wild dog every attacking man, but I wouldn’t like to push this guy too far.

Thanks for looking!

Re: African wild dog

I was having a great day, and this has made it even better ,Thank you xxxxx

They are my fave African animal, and these are superb shots of a beautiful pack. I adore the portrait shot, it's wonderful, and I love looking at the different pack interactions. Sorry, slightly gushy, but love them all! xxx

Re: African wild dog

Very nice set here. Like the second photo best. Good exposure and composition on all these fascinating animals. What lens did you use to capture these? Must have been a very long focal length to get that close.
