Multnomah Falls HDR

Another gorgeous day for a ride in Oregon. Off I rode to Multnomah Falls along Interstate 84. This is the biggest and most popular waterfall in Oregon. Tourists flock to it from all over the world. The key to getting a good shot of this waterfall without a bunch of tourists wandering in the frame is go in the middle of the workweek and show up before 9 a.m..
The HDR setup took a bit more time to set up for this shot because of the waterfall's size. I had to use my Nikkor 18-55mm kit lens at 18mm to get it all in the frame. I wanted to be able to see the base of the falls hitting the pool below. Because I had to shoot in portrait mode my quick bracket for the Really Right Stuff L-Plate wouldn't work since the wired remote plug into the left side of the D90, the same side mounted to the tripod. The way around this was to screw the camera directly onto the Gitzo ball head on my tripod, making sure I could lower the camera to portrait orientation for the shot. That way I could use continuous shoot & 2.0 F-stop bracketing on the three HDR shots. It all worked perfectly as I automatically focused and fired off three frames 2.0 F-stops apart.

Nice work Bob, maybe needs a touch more on the black clipping slider if you used phtomatix?

I use the HDR photomerge feature in Photoshop CS5.

Re: Multnomah Falls HDR

I think this is a nice image, shows the falls well. For me though, I don't like how the thin stream of falls starts at the top in this long image. i would like to either see some space over the top of the falls, or a crop to remove that very first thin section before it widens out a bit. Not sure why, just seems to work better for my taste.

LOL You know I've gotten so good at post processing single images that it's going to take some time to learn HDR processing to the same level. I too like the nonHDR version.

Re: Multnomah Falls HDR

Can't decide which one I prefer Bob.

Composition: - Compared to the second shot - The angle of the Bridge (being straight) works for me in the first image as does the inclusion of the shingle and space around the dead tree in the foreground.

Exposure: - Prefer the second one esp the higher falls - more mist and less bright white.

Fantastic location though and well worth the road trip.
