Bushbuck

Bushbuck are shy, little guys that prefer to skulk away in thick riverine vegetation, so can be fairly difficult to photograph. I spent the last few days trying to build up a few shots of them....

Only the male has horns, this is a mature adult, the dirt on his horns comes from rubbing the gland between his horns against bushes, the ground and termite mounds to mark his territory.

The female has no horns. Bushbuck are generally solitary, except when (somewhat obviously!) mating or the female is caring for a youngster.

The female tucks her youngster away in thick bush to protect it while she forages, making them particularly difficult to get shots of.

But as they get older they get braver and venture out on their own.

They are really beautiful antelope, being so shy they are often overlooked or forgotten about, bit of a shame really!

Thanks for looking!

Re: Bushbuck

Fantastic set, they are very pretty even the males As they are so shy, it makes the set even better, as you appreciate, it would not of been easy, taking these shots.

Any Warthog pics, or African Wild Dogs they are my favessorry, just a little bit jealous again

Thank you so much ,for taking the time to write the captions

Re: Bushbuck

Thanks for such an informative set of great shots. You've done exceptionally well to capture such high quality images given the shyness of the antelope.

A little bit of Africa in my home - thank you

Re: Bushbuck

Great shots regardless of their shyness.

It's nice to see some 'different' animals.
