Photoshop save for web colour shift/problem

For those of you who have noticed that photoshop changes/shifts the colours slightly when saving for web, here's how to correct the problem:
  1. Go to edit > color settings
  2. In 'Settings:' select Monitor Color
  3. Under Color Management Policies > Profile Mismatches, uncheck 'ask when opening'
  4. Click on 'ok'
  5. When you open your first document, a pop-up will show, select the option not to remind in future and click open.
  6. Then when you go to save for web, click on the right hand arrow towards the top (for the drop down to show) and un-check 'convert to sRGB'. Click on 'done'.

All done!

Edit: In response to the post below, I did some further testing, and found that by disabling my monitors colour profile in Windows (Display Settings > Advanced Settings > Colour Management) Photoshop changes the color setting to 'Monitor sRGB' and you can actually check the 'convert to sRGB' in step 6 above and it works fine!. The colours are still the same so I have no idea why the monitors colour profile was needed anyway.

Re: Photoshop save for web colour shift/problem

Just as a slight aside, a lot of browsers will not show your image to its best if you don't have it with sRGB profile. The image can appear flat, and have less oomph than a sRGB image. Unless you are of the chosen few and use Safari on a mac, as this can handle the flatter image profile and show your image off.

I always make sure that my images are sRGB for the web and for printing, indeed sRGB is the default colour space for a lot of camera's.

Re: Photoshop save for web colour shift/problem

I investigated further and found that I didn't need my monitors colour profile - I've added this to the post above:

Re: Photoshop save for web colour shift/problem

Hi Azz

My work flow is to work in CS3 in with Adobe RGB. If I am saving for web, before I do so I change the profile to sRGB via Edit - Convert To Profile - Destination Space, change to sRGB. I have it written as an action assigned to a shortcut key.

Doing this prevents the colour difference in the in Save for Web. The reason for the colour difference is because you have the workspace in RGB and saving in sRGB and what you are seeing is the difference in the two colour spaces. By converting before saving for web there is no conversion taking place in the saving procedure.

Because it has a wider gamut than sRGB. In other words in shows more colours than sRGB

This explains better than I can "RGB
Determines the RGB color space of the application. In general, it’s best to choose Adobe RGB or sRGB, rather than the profile for a specific device (such as a monitor profile).

sRGB is recommended when you prepare images for the web, because it defines the color space of the standard monitor used to view images on the web. sRGB is also a good choice when you work with images from consumer-level digital cameras, because most of these cameras use sRGB as their default color space.

Adobe RGB is recommended when you prepare documents for print, because Adobe RGB’s gamut includes some printable colors (cyans and blues in particular) that can’t be defined using sRGB. Adobe RGB is also a good choice when working with images from professional-level digital cameras, because most of these cameras use Adobe RGB as their default color space."

As I either print or submit a lot of my images to libraries who want RGB I set my workspace to RGB. If I wish to upload to the web then I convert to sRGB immediately prior to saving for web.

This is how I have my Colour prefs set up in CS3

Steve

Edit; just to say I have my camera set up in Adobe RGB also

Re: Photoshop save for web colour shift/problem

To be honest I would have thought most pro studios involved in print work would work in CMYK as that's what most commercial printers use when printing.

Not sure about photographers tho to be honest.
