It was a while ago i did this and a cheap tamron lens, they ranged from 20-30secs i found f22 could give me a longer shutter speed before it blew out.

Very interesting technique - always fancied trying it - but I'm almost never in a place with lots of cars at night time! will have to make a special trip!
