There's some good work here. #3 is out of focus but could be improved with selective sharpening on the eye. #4 is a real keeper. Again, if the eyes were sharpened just a bit more it would be the best of the bunch. Much improved photos. Keep shooting.

Auto focus local(I think)....I tried spot - but that was no good for the action shots - It just would not get there, and wide was also a no go - so I think I settled with Local....possibly no good for the still shots...:?

Try evaluative metering and continuous focusing.

Having read the manual today - it would have been continous focus (that is the 'auto' focus in S mode) ....
