Fortress Northumberland

Northumberland has more castles than any other English county, mainly because its on the border between England and Scotland.

Rich in fortifications from down the years, Roman camps, Iron Age hillforts, Bastles, the Roman wall, and many ruined castles give testimony to this much fought over county.

Bamburgh Castle, home of the Kings of Northumbria since AD 547, .

Warkwoth castle, stronghold of the Percys, its most famous / infamous son being Harry Hotspur.

Edligham Castle, 14th century fortified manor house.

Lindisfarne Castle, ( Holy Island ), built in Tudor times it is a favorite photography area for many.

Tynemouth castle and Priory, built on a rocky outcrop known as Pen Bal Crag, and was the burial site of the Kings Of Northumbria.

Dunstanburgh Castle. held by the Lancastrians during the wars of the roses, and painted by the famous artist William Turner. Its most often photographed from the North showing the pebble beach in the foreground.

What Fogey said, plus that last shot with all the people walking, reminds me how these wonderful old ruins & monuments draw us in.

Re: Fortress Northumberland

Cheers Phil, nearby Stag rocks just North of the castle is a great birding site in winter, good for Red-necked and Slavonian grebes.

Re: Fortress Northumberland

I remember walking on Bamburgh beach many years ago in August and having miles of sand virtually to ourselves. A later visit saw only a slight increase in numbers and visiting Bamburgh Castle stills sticks in my mind even though that visit was getting on for 30 yrs ago.

Thats for a lovely set Brian which evoked fond memories. Lindisfarne gorgeous also.

I thought the Bastles started out in the Cavern Club in Liverpool.
