50mm f1.8 :D

Well - on a spur of the moment Karl popped into Cork today and bought me the Nikon 50mm f1.8D! I've been wanting a 50mm for a while, and am ideally after the 1.4 - but that's criminally expensive over here - and at the moment the 1.8 seems to be the same price as UK with none of the hefty 21% tax added (they do that for all such goods here). So it was only €139.99 - which is pretty darn good. The f1.4 for the record is €400 So - I'll get that at some stage, but for now the 1.8 will do me fine. Had a play about a bit this evening, and it's a fantastic lens - really happy with it! Will post some photos later/tomorrow - but just wanted to share my new-lens-glee!

Also, it'll really come in handy for the weekend when I have a commission to do - it'll make a great portrait lens I reckon - I should be able to get some great fun shots with it!

Re: 50mm f1.8 :D

you really wouldnt notcie the difference between the 1.4 & 1.8 - I cant, except for VERY low light indoor photography; even then the 1.8 is still a great performer. Save your money and put it to better use would be my advice.

Re: 50mm f1.8 :D

Some would argue the bokeh is nicer on the 1.4 - from the examples I saw I preferred the 1.4 a little more.

The 1.8 is great too mind!

Re: 50mm f1.8 :D

I have to say I agree Azz - may see if I can borrow a 1.4 for a bit before deciding though, and see if the difference is great enough for me, before I would bother to upgrade it. Certainly, for now, the 1.8 seems to be more than fine! In any case, I was thinking of getting a second 50mm at some stage, so I could use one of them for reversing ring stuffs. Tip I received from one of the camera club fellas, that it's wise if you can to have a separate lens used for that because crawling around in flowers etc the connections get dusty, and even with cleaning can dirty the connections inside the camera. Made sense to me anyway .

Either way, for now the 1.8 is perfectly fine, and we'll see about whether I do go to the 1.4 - maybe, maybe not! Am really enjoying playing with this lens though!

Re: 50mm f1.8 :D

My version of this lens is the old non D one introduced in 1986 so it could be over 20 years old.. I bought it for peanuts on eBay. Just been out in the garden and shot this to show you what the old un can do.

Re: 50mm f1.8 :D

Very nice NS!

So far I have to say, I'm very impressed. I'm hoping it'll be nice for portraits - it should be, from what I've seen others doing with it so far.

Re: 50mm f1.8 :D

You will love it, I love mine , it does make great portraits too xx
TBH I really, really wanted the F1.4 too, but I couldn't afford it at the timeThe Bokeh is superb, and I love pics I have seen with it

I am buying a 85mm next, and it is the same thing, buy it now and get the 1.8 or save up more and get the 1.4, which is double the price, but after seeing several comparison threads, I know which I really want.

Re: 50mm f1.8 :D

The 'nifty fifty' is a brilliant lens and for the low cost it does give those of us not able or willing to spend mega-bucks a chance to do shallow dof and also pics in poor light.
