I get that impression aswell from the internet, but he does seem to know his cameras

It is interesting he rates the D90 higher than the D300, doesn't help a confused person like myself

Here is the D90 guide

Re: D300 vs D90?

They are two different cameras really. The D300 is more 'professional' in it's build quality (magnesium), weather sealing, CF cards rather than SD, access to dials and buttons, etc. The D90 has improved jpg processing that out of camera can make the image look a little better and is also smaller and lighter. The D300 feels for me, just right, but I have big hands. Either of those would work for you Moonie, as we discussed in PM, maybe the 90 would be better after the smaller Olympus.

I rate Rockwells advice, much of it can be backed up by reading reviews elsewhere but I'm not sure about some of his quirky ideas about maximum saturation and vivid and the stuff about UFO's!

LOL thanks for the help and advice.

I thought it would be easy picking a new camera

The magnesium body doesn't bother me, as I don't do sport type shots oo really throw my camera about, same goes for the weather sealing. I thought the D90 took CF cards, so that is something to think about as I have quite a few now,and would have to buy new SD cards

I think the casing of the D300 is more Pro, but from what I can gather there isn't much in it in image quality like you said, the size and weight issue is another thing to think about, as I often go off exploring with my camera, would I be able to lug a D300 around for a few hours.

I am not bothered about having a so called "Pro" camera, it is all about the image for me, and practicalities like can I carry it for several hours etc. though I obviously want a good camera, that can help me take the best possible shots for my abilities.

Also, buy buying the D90 it would allow me to have more spends for a couple of really decent lenses. It is all a balancing act between the camera and the lenses I suppose

I really can't afford to get the wrong camera though, which is why it is taking me so bloody long to choose

I apoligise for the millionth time for going on about this again

Re: D300 vs D90?

I went for the D300 on the basis of it's superior AF tracking system for bird in flight shots (51 points vs 11), and the higher build quality. Seeing as a lot of the photography I do is outdoors and in all weathers, I needed a camera body that could stand up to anything I put it through. I also like the accessibility of the controls...menu systems drive me bonkers...especially if you need to change the settings quickly before your subject has flown away!

I did find the size of the thing a bit scary at first, especially after using a D60 for a year, but I've got used to it, and the D60 feels a bit like a toy in comparison now!

I suspect either could work well for you...I just chose the D300 on the basis of what I'd be using it for most, i.e outdoor stuff. I've got no desire to go full frame for the same reason, I LIKE the crop factor for wildlife shots!

Re: D300 vs D90?

I would go into your local photography shop and have a feel of both - there's just something about the D300 that feels 'right' in your hands. As much as I love the D40, I just don't have the same feeling towards it anymore, and do miss the D300 a great deal!

Re: D300 vs D90?

Based on the work you seem to do the D90 would be ideal. You seem to be out in good weather and have reasonably stationary or slow moving subjects. Isn't the new 5000 meant to sit a little lower than the D90 but probably also produces similar results.

I may be wrong about SD cards then but I thought they moved to SD with the D80. In their more upmarket cameras they stick with CF, a choice of professionals and, apparently, more reliable.

HAHa that made me giggle as my Oly uses CF cards

The thing is I may suddenly decide I want to go trawling through the mud

I think my problem is , I resent having to pay the stupid price increase on the D300. It just pees me off. As it is money I could put towards lenses.
