Comparison of RAW & JPEG

The first pic was taken in RAW format. Processed by Canon's sofware.
The second pic was taken and stored as JPEG on the flash card, apart from some slight tone difference, which could be adjusted with PS, unless It's my eyes, I really can't see the difference, comments please, what am I doing wrong.

PS: they've both been resized down to 9.25meg.

Re: Comparison of RAW & JPEG

The only difference I can see is that the black is more black on the first one and more blue on the second

Thanks for the reply Steph, but as I said, tones can be adjusted, the image sizes on my HD are 10.1 meg for RAW before processing and 3.5 meg for the JPEG.

Re: Comparison of RAW & JPEG

There wont be much visual difference Nero. A JPEG is your FINAL image and little pp, such as contrast, colour, sharpening, WB ect can be done on it. However a RAW file is NOT your FINAL image. It can be adjusted hugley in the likes of "lightroom". As well as the above, exposure can be changed, vibrancy and clarity, shadows and highlights ect ect also can be adjusted. A RAW stores the INFORMATION of the image for later pp a JPEG does not.

You have done nothing wrong

Think in terms of a pizza. A JPEG will make and finish the pizza for you, you will have to accept it wether your happy with the toppings or not. a RAW however will put the basics together but will let you add or take away ingrediants soi ts to your liking

Thanks for that K, when I was processing the RAW pic I had various options such as colour, light, sharpness etc, but I can do all that in PS, the big difference I noticed was the file size, so where has all the extra info gone ?

PS: can I post a raw image on here ?

Re: Comparison of RAW & JPEG

The extra information in a JPEG just isnt there. Its already been put together and the "pizza" made and baked. A RAW doesnt do that. It keeps all the ingredients seperate - hence the bigger file size.

You wont be able to post a RAW image Nero. It will need to be converted to a JPEG

LOL @ Phil! You can even change the sauce colour if you want!

How about if I chage the file extention from .cr2 to .jpg then post it on Photobucket ? perhaps you could then show me and others what can be done with RAW.

Re: Comparison of RAW & JPEG

Yep that should be fine Nero. Photobucket can upload different files (i think) o JPEG as well so its worth checking out what it supports.

Ill do a RAW edit later - just off to have some tea

Great analogy KK!

Also, I can see more colour in the top photo, esp in the background at the right hand side.
