Re: Which long range Lens?

You don't say how much you want to spend, but I would have a look at the Nikon 70-300VR lens I find it a very good lens and not over heavy. If you after a longer "reach" then you will definately have to consider image stablisation although not strictly necessary it does make things loads easier.

Sigma do lenses within a reasonable price range up to 500mm but when working at that end of the scale support via a tripod is a must

Re: Which long range Lens?

I use the sigma 70-300mm DG APO for wildlife pics. I find it a versatile lens and excellent quality for the money (c.£190). A tripod would be a good idea using it at the long end of the lens if your shutter speed is less than 1.5-2x the focal length you are operating at.

I already have the 55-200vr so would the 70-300 make much difference?

Re: Which long range Lens?

If you were getting the 70-300 you'd prob trade your 55-200 in

The Sigma 500, or Bigma as Ste calls it lol, will give you more reach
Kit 1
Nikon D300
Nikon 55-200mm VR
Kit 2
Nikon D40
Nikon 18-55mm

Re: Which long range Lens?

the difference is you will be racking your focal reach up by over a third.
