The restriction is on equipment over 30cm in length so it is perfectly possible to
take in a camera with a "longish" lens.
My D3 with a 300mm prime fitted (albeit a pretty slow lens) is only 27cm so would be allowed.
I certainly would not want someone sitting in front of me waving about a 600mm monster.

I would suggest reading the list of restricted items properly rather than reading the Daily Wail for your information.

Thats your opinion and your welcome to it, its from experience in my case not just an article in a paper. i merely used it as an example . I did read the article Nice first post.

Re: Olympic Ban.

What is needed is for every photographer going to the games to ask if this or that bit of photographic equipment is allowed and ask for a written reply. That should stuff up their restrictions. My betting is foreigners will be allowed cameras in as they can pretend not to speak English. The Japanese for example the first thing they pack is a camera.

Re: Olympic Ban.

Well 30cm is 30cm regardless of the type of kit so restrictions are clear whether it by written request or at the turnstyle.

I actually think that's a pretty generous restriction.

The Olympic football restriction differs (only read Old Trafford) in that your not allowed any item at all that has the ability to record any form of photograph or video.

That's normal for Old Trafford's policy however when it comes to enforcing that policy a DSLR is not allowed past the turnstyle however compact cameras (regardless of zoom capability) are.

I guess what's key is whether the 30cm restriction will be enforced or whether it will be like the football in that the enforcing differs from the rules clearly laid down.

Experience at the olympic park?

My experience there, having been there last night, was exactly the opposite.
I took my dslr and 2 lenses (longest being 300mm) and not a word was said anywhere in the park, including in the stadium.
Police, security, squaddies, volunteers were all quite happy to be photographed.
Not a single part of the park was "off-limits" to photography (although there were parts where one could not access).

Even in the stadium itself, where, according to the t&c's for the rehearsal photography was not allowed, was not a problem and I saw dozens of Dslrs. All that was asked was that pictures from the actual rehearsal were not "published" until after the main event on Friday.

Again, the restrictions are on equipment over 30cm in length and includes golf brollies, tripods etc and very long (in physical size) lenses.

There are some venues where cameras might not be allowed such as some of the football stadiums but that is their rules whether the Olympics is on or not.
