Photography pet hates

I was thinking the other day while looking at some on-line motor sport & auto-motive photography (two of my fav types of photography), that several things have started to bug me. There are invariably from time to time trends that come along, some I like and some I hate.

That got me wondering if any other forum members have any photography pet hates?

These are the one's that bug me:

1. heavily slanted shots.
2. false flare.
3. false lens flare.
4. false smoke.
5. Over cooked HDR.
6. Really intrusive copyrights.

Re: Photography pet hates

There's not too many things I dislike but having said that some of the things I do dislike I can actually really like if they're done well and for the right reasons rather than for the sake of it.

Heavily slanted shots are one of those things that can look terrible if they're just presented slanted for the sake of it but some (dare I say it) motorsport shots and even more so architectural shots can work really well if done right.

I guess one pet hate I do have is HDR. Not the actual HDR images themselves but more what folk these days seem to think HDR is. To me it's a technique - a solution to getting a correct exposure where you would otherwise struggle to capture the dynamic range in a scene that had too much contrasting bright and dark areas. Done well, you might never know it was an HDR shot but we now seem to think of HDR as a particular 'look' and I agree that sometimes it becomes almost unnatural and cartoonish.

Another relates to bird photography. In some circles it seems that you have to have a completely clutter free out of focus background for a shot to be considered good. I have my fair share of these shots but sometimes I like to include what's around the bird as part of the photograph - the bird just being part of the overall image.

Buachaille Etive Mor. This is something I really hate and it's mostly down to the fact that I'm probably more guilty of it than anybody. Obviously it's not Buachaille Etive Mor itself but the terrible habit of being a complete sheep and photographing well known landscape views over and over again instead of forcing myself to pass on by and look for something new and refreshing.

Re: Photography pet hates

I've only been a member for an hour and already you have got me going.
Where do I start?
Photographs of:
Pets, especially cats. Dogs a close second.
Snotty nosed kids.
Teenagers with their tongue out and doing that thing with their fingers.
Weddings
Anything described with letters (HDR for example)
Last nights dinner
People's feet.
Other hates include:
People asking what you are doing while you are taking photos or what camera you own or what lens you used or how tall I am.
People who tell you your picture is really sharp, follows the 'Rule of Thirds', has nice colour, looks good in B&W, or might be better cropped to the shape of a dodecahedron or whatever.
There! I feel better already.
Cheers

Re: Photography pet hates

Tom you might be on the wrong forum then,

because we love our cats and dogs and kids.

We like a wedding and will ask you what lens you used.

We will tell you its sharp or nice colour and also it looks good in black and white.

So note to self....''don't speak to Tom or comment on anything he does.

How then can us lesser mortals learn Tom, if we don't get feedback from the more experienced toggers?

The feedback might include, sharpness versus DOF, a letterbox crop as opposed to a square crop, looks good/better in black and white.

Why then, would you want to post a picture here if you don't want any comments from your peers?

Just curious.

Re: Photography pet hates

Hi Guys
I wasn't expecting an outcry of indignation. I just answered the question. I could have gone on all night but I thought it might be wise to appear conciliatory and discrete on the first post.
Oh, I forgot to mention, I hate anything sarcastic, cynical, ironic and people who take me seriously.
Cheers
