Where is the line between macro and close ups

where is the line between macro and close ups ?
I see pictures in this section that I would call close ups so just like to know is there a rule of thumb ?

Re: Where is the line between macro and close ups

Good question Cakey.

I think macro is from 50mm up to 105mm plus.

I have been looking at a designated macro lense but am just not that convinced that I need more than my nifty fifty and I am not that keen on bees knees.

Re: Where is the line between macro and close ups

Nowerdays the term 'Macro' is a loose term but true Macro is where 1:1 scale (life size) or even higher magnification can be recorded onto the sensor or negative.
Kit 1
Canon 1D Mark 3
Canon EF 17-40mm f/4 L USM
Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM
Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II
Kit 2
1D2 & 40D

Re: Where is the line between macro and close ups

Is it possible to get a true macro (what Phil describes 1:1) for a Canon for around 250 squid, even second hand. The kind of macro lens where you can see the hairs on a wasp legs

or do I need to sell the house....

Re: Where is the line between macro and close ups

I would like a macro lens to see if a midge is male or female and a long range zoom lens so I don't have to walk up to the subject
