With the FZ38 I seen something and shot it at either F2 zoomed in to get the blur background, or shutter of 800 or 1000 to freeze..... I have so much to learn. (Did mess about with slower to get running water flow or car tail lights). One thing I have noticed already is the D1300 is much more sensitive.

Biggest tip, shoot loads!
Good advice on keeping the shutter speed higher than focal length, generally this will give you the best results in a sharp shot. All depends on the subject, a moving one will need a lot higher speed than just the equivalent of the focal length. Try shooting a burst, of a moving subject 2 or 3 shots, helps with camera shake as for the second shot the camera is still after the inevitable movement from the shutter press.
Dslr will generally have a narrower dof at a particular aperture than other types of cams, so take this into account when shooting. F/2 on a dslr is NARROW dof!

Biggest two bonuses you should experience is 1) no shutter lag like on a bridge camera 2) a bigger sensor. I would also expect that the lens will be sharper. You should also find it easier to compose pictures on a proper optical viewfinder. Well done.
