We not quite 'a couple of times' as mine was professionally done for £30 and was only without my camera a couple of days.

Re: Canon 50D sensor is a dusty-dirty mess...

Quote " I have had really bad experience with a Canon service that is close to where I live," unquote. Not my words but from Phodography .

So having it "professionally" clean can work out a lot more expensive than again by Little Me Quote " mine was professionally done for £30 and was only without my camera a couple of days." Unquote

As Phodography would have to send the camera away twice for the same clean without any guarrantee of the job being done correctly would cost £60, and maybe for even a third time, and that is only the "first" time the sensor would have been cleaned. She would be without the camera for about a week at least.

If the sensor got dirty again in the future, and cost the same again to have the job done another twice or three times then what I said about buying the total kit for around £150 and after a couple of self cleans isn't too far off the mark from being cheaper.

Without buying the butterfly but only the Loupe and cleaning stuff it would definately work out much cheaper at around £26 for pads/pleck/fluid and loupe by visible dust at around £55 , there are cheaper ones at around the £20/25 mark

Re: Canon 50D sensor is a dusty-dirty mess...

Why would you say it wouldnt be done correctly? If it wasnt done right, you'd send it back. There are companies here in the UK that do it while you wait, "Fixation" is one of them, takes about 1/2 to 3/4 hr. It costs £32.90 for all normal sensors and £64.63 for full frames. perhaps Phodography feels more secure in having it done professionally.

Another option is to put the camera in for a service.

The sensor gets done as part of the job.

Re: Canon 50D sensor is a dusty-dirty mess...

One of the local camera shops offers to show the customer how to do it and with the right tools which will set you back a whopping $20 bucks. My 50D was bad too. Not quite this bad but it was close. I did drop mine off at the local camera shop and they have a guy who picks up a couple times a week (so there is NO shipping) This cost me $165 to have done but I personally would rather have the experts do it and I had it back in my hands in a week.

That makes you very special around these parts Mary

I do clean my own sensor, but tend to leave it until it starts to become a nuisance to clone out all the dust spots.

I use a combination of wet cleaning (if oily spots) and a soft dry brush for dust particles.

Re: Canon 50D sensor is a dusty-dirty mess...

in the nearly 4 years Ive had my D300 Ive cleaned it once and found it very easy following the instructions .

a tip I learnt was to keep the camera pointing downwards when changing lens awkward at first but you get used to it
