Re: Canon 1D v 40D - Autofocus - first impressions

Thanks Ken

I was hoping you would stumble on this thread at some point.

Loving the AF - I know it's an older model but it just seems to hit things my 40D couldn't.

The APS-H 1.3 size is a new thing for me but I'm liking it so far.

Landscapes - I've only the 50mm and 100-400mm lens that I can use with it just now as the lenses I have with the 40D are EF-S.

My 2X converter allows autofocus albeit centre point providing I'm at f4 (=f8) so that's a bonus.

Hi Phil

You will find your 100-400 works well with a 1.4x Canon converter on the 1D.

I'll post a couple full sized links to examples for you.

Re: Canon 1D v 40D - Autofocus - first impressions

Here you go Phil, a couple of samples with the 100-400L + EF1.4 mkII converter, so auto-focusing at f8.

The ship was about a mile or so out to sea, so there is a lot of heat haz other wise it would be a little sharper.

The second was a quick back garden test shot.

Re: Canon 1D v 40D - Autofocus - first impressions

Thanks for that Ken.

My TC is a 2X so can probably only retain AF with f2.8 or f4.

The 1.4X would certainly be better suited for my 100-400.

The only lenses I have that I can use with the 1D just now are 100-400mm and 50mm

The plan is replace the 40D/Grip/17-85 with a landscape lens - probably 17-40 f4

Question - why is the 1D series able to retain autofocus through a teleconverter to f8 but other models can't ?

Re: Canon 1D v 40D - Autofocus - first impressions

Phil, I believe it's the better focus sensors used, they will work with any lens up to f8.

As far as I know the pro bodies have always had that advantage over the semi-pro bodies.
