Is it best to be single?

Getting out there doing your photography is it best to be single?

I try to get out on my own, walking miles with a camera on a Saturday, preferring (for photographic reasons) to go to events on my own so I can spend ages looking for shots, talking to people, going around the same things again and again. If I take other half, she only wants to see things once, has to smile patiently whilst I try to get my shots in a hurry and of course doesn'talways want to go to the same event I want to.

i guess some of you perhaps have mutual interests with your partners, dogs and dog events, or sharing the kids which may be the subject of your photography... but otherwise do you find them standing around increasingly frustrated whilst you change lenses, screw on the polariser, hope that the guy with the big whiskers moves to the left a little...?

I need an affair... with a geeky photographic female!!! ha ha!! Any single YoP ladies get in touch! So, do you try and dump your partner or kids when you are out, maybe you are single and it's much better that way... what tips do you have to keep a non-photographic partner amused whilst you do your pictures?

(PS If my Mrs reads this she already understands!)

Re: Is it best to be single?

John is a blessing when it comes to my photography No he doesn't share my interests in my photography or Atlas (ie racing etc) but he looks after the kids when I want to go out, used to take me to various locations when i couldn't drive, and even researches prices/lenses/lights etc for me if i cant find the time myself!

Im lucky that John is unwaveringly supportive and never complains about my droning on about the latest prime, or when I sit for hours at my desk editing a session or my site. Hes my constant support and i dont think id be where I am without him xx

Re: Is it best to be single?

my family hate me taking pictures and would much rather I didn't!!!!
I've given up trying to do interesting landscapes, flower shots while we are out together as it drives them potty.
My 10 year old is starting to show an interest now which I think is going to be fun.

Re: Is it best to be single?

My family 'tolerate' my photography.

I'm sure if I invested money in better kit and was trying to generate some income from photography I would get all the encouragement under the sun but as it's just a hobby I accept that sometimes they must get a bit annoyed with me.

Karen is a saint when we're out and about or on holiday as she is happy for me to go off on my own for a day but you know how things are - she's often left sitting in the car with the kids whilst I just nip out for 5 mins. I hate having to work that way as I end up rushing - getting crap results and I still end up owing her one.

If I'm planning a trip or want to be more serious I go alone and if need be take a day off work - that way I'm not impacting on anybody other than myself.

Re: Is it best to be single?

I think it depends on the company - some people like photography and don't mind in the slightest waiting around, but some get bored. I think it's always best to go with a fellow photographer if you going to go with anyone tho - as that way you won't feel so guilty.

Re: Is it best to be single?

I sometimes go out with my dad who is a keen photographer but even he looks bored rigid while I fiddle with my settings and angles to get THE shot!

Re: Is it best to be single?

James really doesn't mind waiting around whilst i take my photos, but even though i know he doesn't mind, i feel like i am holding him up or being a pain and tend to rush my work. Also not seeing him much all week due to him doing 12 hour days and by the time he gets in and we've had dinner it has gone 9pm, i like having weekends to ourselves when we are not showing or working the dogs.

It will be different in the winter as he will be racing the dogs and i will be back in my usual spot taking photos of all the teams, and can walk around to get the shots i want to get and not worry about James waiting for me... i don't really do much photography over the summer.

Re: Is it best to be single?

Oddly enough, it's the other way round for me.

I really don't like going to places that I have little/no interest in, understandable, but once I had an interest in photography, I would go almost anywhere (albeit with my camera)

So the happy medium is, I go with my camera, or 'we' don't go

Re: Is it best to be single?

We have been married for almost 47 years (childhood sweethearts), even after all this time my wife always wants to come with me wherever I am going. She will do anything I ask, hold equipment or reflectors, stand around for any length of time, and is on the constant lookout for interesting shots. She just loves us being out together and helping wherever she can. She doesn't mind how much time I spend on my hobby or how much money I spend. She's a gem.
