Re: Nikon D300 Picture Control

I really like the Nikon colours in those settings - I use the vivid setting in mine too, tho not the highest setting, somewhere in the middle. Or they can seem a little over-saturated... you have to experiment with what you prefer really

Re: Nikon D300 Picture Control

Ken Rockwell talks about strong saturated colours, personally this is too Sony-like (artificial) for me...prefer more natural colours that you can, if you prefer, play with later.

Re: Nikon D300 Picture Control

Niko.

I find it strange that sometimes neutral or standard settings are better for some pictures than vivid. I have set the saturation setting to +1 on all of the above and locked it into customs setting bank A. I did up the sharpening as well at the same time which seems to work better on my camera.

The first picture,on my monitor, looks a little too vivid and maybe I would suggest using neutral with saturation boost may be better.
I have also added Portrait and Landscape to the set picture control list and the Landscape one for this kind of picture seems to work well.

Re: Nikon D300 Picture Control

Now in picture no 2, presuming the same settings, ie vivid was used, the colours appear about right. So all I can conclude is that the lighting conditions- subject matter - conditions shooting under -where one is shooting- does require different settings in this Picture Control section of the menu. When in the Shooting menu and Set Picture Control is lit, by pressing the lock key button does give what each does and they do say that vivid is for a vivid photoprint effect.

Re: Nikon D300 Picture Control

Th top pic is too saturated for my tastes, the second seems much better.

Re: Nikon D300 Picture Control

I use vivid +2, and only occasionally will I change it in the 'shop and usually I use vibrance rather than hue and sat which boosts the colours that need it rather than all of em.

All depends on the circumstances I think, in #1 the light looks too flat to have produced those colours so pic looks a little off.

Re: Nikon D300 Picture Control

They both look over saturated / blown to me.

What is the benefit of boosting colours in camera rather than PP?

Re: Nikon D300 Picture Control

If you are saving straight to jpg then for some people that will be it, no PP. Some cameras, particularly compacts like Sony's boost the saturation so people look suntanned, healthy, greener grass, makes holiday snaps look good. It's a bit like when you visit the relatives or friends (when the mrs lets me out), you see their tele has the colours turned up but they love it. Personal, or manufacturers preference. I have seen people saying thats a good camera, lovely colours, about Sony's when I have thought they looked artificial. That can sell cameras, why make people look white and pasty sitting on a day trip to Scarborough when they can look like they have had two weeks in the Med!

I would guess most people here prefer more natural colours so they can play with them or because they want accuracy. I'm not into nature and animal photography (except landscapes) but I would imagine most people want their dogs and nature shots to look about right. You can manipulate them from jpg, but have more flexibility if PP'ing from raw.

Not quite the answer as to me I cant really think why I'd want oversaturated jpgs, but the reason above is one for others maybe..
