Re: Canon SX210 vs Panasonic TZ10/TZ7, TZ8

Nice shots Moonie. I have heard that the lens is actually better on the Panasonics

So far what I've gathered is:

Canon SX210

Has longer zoom, pretty much 30-398 !!
Manual / AP/ SP modes
Downside - lens quality sacrificed a bit for range

TZ7

Basically last years version of the this years TZ10
Great PQ
Decent lens up to 300
Downside - no manual modes

TZ8

This years model just below the Tz10
Apart from geo-tagging/gps, and some video modes/options - same features as TZ10
Downside - some say TZ7 is better than tz8, and has better PQ than both tz8 and tz10 pq

Wonder if Nikon or any of the others have any decent comp? I think the Sony's are pretty good too...

Moonie - can you email me a full size version of one of those pics please? Can you shoot in raw with the TZ8?
Kit 1
Nikon D300
Nikon 55-200mm VR

Re: Canon SX210 vs Panasonic TZ10/TZ7, TZ8

The canon sx210 is out - iso performance above 400 is meant to be a bit rubbish compared to the others.

So it's between the TZ7 and TZ10 - TZ7 has lower pixel density so the quality will be better according to most people. Lacks manual modes but the Ai mode is meant to be excellent anyway..

Question is would I want geo-tagging of the newer model? Guess not but dunno!

I wish these decisions were easy

Re: Canon SX210 vs Panasonic TZ10/TZ7, TZ8

No, it doesn't shoot RAW, but the Fine Jpeg is good, gives you a file of about 6MB.

It has Manual, Aperture,Shutter,Programme,a fully Auto Intelligent mode, TBH because it's a P&S , the more you delve into the customisation menu, and set it up how you want it, the better the pics will be. So obviously, shooting in Manual is going to give you the best results. The kids have tried it in Auto mode, and the pics aren't too bad. Image stabilisation is good too.

You might find it too small though for you, depends how big your hands are, some buttons are V small, so could see people with bigger or less nimble fingers struggling.

Panasonics always have yummy Leica lens Mmmmm. I love them, this is my third Panasonic camera, and I love the pic quality.

You have to be realistic Azz,the pictures will be far better outside, these are small P&S, and the pictures are fab when you consider these aren't DSLR's .

The reason I got this one ,was because I wasn't bothered about video(got a Panasonic Video cam), GPS or a bigger screen, so it suited me, if you want the above, go for the camera above this.

I suppose it comes down to what you are going to be using it for, mine is for travelling, and taking shots of the kids, dogs, days out, but it is decent enough, if you do see something that makes you go wow! then you should be able to get a good shot.

Having said all that, I have taken some good shots with my iPhone

Sending full size file now

Re: Canon SX210 vs Panasonic TZ10/TZ7, TZ8

I went ahead and ordered the TZ7

Didn't need the geo-tagging of the TZ10 and the TZ8 doesn't have the video modes that the 7 does. Also, I prefer lower pixel density cameras a little more as the output is more to my taste. Tho, they will all be pretty similar anyway.

Here are some TZ7 shots I found on the web:

I choose super saver delivery so I got a day or two to change my mind if need be... any reason _not_ to get the TZ7?

(Btw I didn't get your email Moonie)

The general consensus seems to be if you want manual controls you will most likely use a DSLR - especially because on a P&S it would be quite fiddly making such changes, plus and I guess more importantly the AI mode is meant to be so good that using manual controls will most likely give you an inferior picture in everyday photography Least that's what I read The newer models TZ8 and 10 do have manual modes tho.

Edit: here's a few more:

Re: Canon SX210 vs Panasonic TZ10/TZ7, TZ8

I use my manual controls on my P&S , as I am not so keen on the Auto Intelligent results.

Think quite a few of those shots are using the in camera Art filter - High Definition it's called on mine, it's great, but you can't undo it,so if you come across a scene ,take a normal shot first, as it might be too strong for your tastes afterwards.

Enjoy your new camera

Odd about the file, do you want me to send the file again?

I love that vibrant colour - it's similar to how I have my D40 set-up

I didn't get any email from you - wonder where it went :-/ no need to re-send tho as I've ordered now... and will only cry if it's much better than the TZ7 shots
