Re: How good is Adobe software?

I disagree (cantankerous old fart that I am) But by the simple fact of saving as a jpeg, some information is being thrown away. Why buy a camera that can capture x amount of information and then discard some of that information by saving as jpeg.

Also, by using raw, one can determine how much sharpening, colour balance, white balance etc. to use and you are not tied to the set profiles within the camera.

Re: How good is Adobe software?

I take it then that you never convert to jpeg and only ever work with TIFF?

Re: How good is Adobe software?

I keep all the raw files as the originals and then when I need to print or submit an image I process it in Lightroom (it remembers what adjustments you make in a sidecar file so leaving the original raw untouched) and export as either a 16bit psb or 16bit tif.

The only times I may save a jpeg copy is for posting on the web or e-mailing to someone.

So my workflow is

Raw from camera -> Lightroom -> rate images -> process anything above 3 star rating but do not save a copy. If I need a print or tiff or jpg I export from Lightroom when it is required.

Every night I have a program that copies all new raw files loaded on the computer since the program last run to a separate external hardrive. This means I have two copies of every original raw file I have taken just in case a hard drive dies.

Re: How good is Adobe software?

With Nikons, if you don't use Nikons own raw editing suite you lose all the camera information (so in adobe LR you get the 'flat' raw file to work with). I think the same is true for Canon, except there isn't any Canon Software out there?

Re: How good is Adobe software?

In that case you are unusual, in that you don't save as a jpeg. Do you send the files off to be printed as TIFF or do you print yourself?

Re: How good is Adobe software?

I take my images to professional printers in Weymouth on compact flash card in tif format. If they find they have problems with colours they give me a ring to ask if I want them to adjust the colour or to leave as is.

Occasionally I get prints online from Peak. Their software converts the Tifs to jpeg2000 and then uploads them.

Re: How good is Adobe software?

Adobe CS3/4 is the Daddy of editing software. However as previously pointed out, its highly unlikely for a photographer to need everything it has to offer so elements is a much better and cheaper option.

Shooting RAW is always the better option for a professional, but it doesn't mean JPEG is obsolete and doesn't have its uses (convenience for one, or maybe not being picky over the final outcome for another). Raw requires editing and an understanding of basic editing processes and how to use them. If you want to avoid this, shoot JPEG.

RAW allows for none destructive editing and a higher degree of manipulation and personalization to a shot. JPEGS are compressed and tend to suffer from artifacts and are less clear.

Throwing money at a camera and making it work for you isnt always the better option (why not shoot in AUTO if you think this is the case??) Spending a couple of minutes processing RAW using a much more sophisticated software than whats built into the camera, would give you a much more pleasing capture.

Re: How good is Adobe software?

The images in AP last week demonstrate that jpeg loses quality over raw. Jpeg is acknowledged worldwide as a lossy format. The compression algorithm takes out information it thinks it can dispose of. It's a fact. Various manufacturers adjust their in camera algorithms to improve things and get it better or worse same as mobile phone manufacturers with cameras...e.g. Nokias tend to over-process. It has been previously acknowledged that in camera processing of images isn't as good as a software programme off camera. Most manufacturers of professional DSLR's expect images to be reworked as they come out soft whereas your cheaper compact often produces what for most people is the end result in jpg. I will stick to my Raws for now!
