Studio Lighting - is this kit any good?

Thinking about getting some studio lighting to take some portraits of the family, just wondered if this kit looks any good?

£49.99

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/White-Umbrella...d=p3286.c0.m14

Also, would it just be cheaper to just get two white umbrellas, two high powered diy type lights and two tripods to mount them on?

What kind of bulbs are usually used? Any other recommendations?

Would a SB600/flash through a white brolly work better or equally as good?

Your thoughts appreciated!

I used to have a lighting set up in the 70's and 80's. Used photoflood bulbs and the problem was heat and tungsten yellow colour cast that had to be corrected with a blue filter for film. Now I guess you just set the white balance. Not sure what bulbs these would use, maybe halogen? constant lighting does have an advantage over flash, you can see already what the result will be but again with digital cameras you get to see pretty quick anyway and flash is ttl.

By the time you buy the brollies and some decent adjustable stands I would expect this set up to be reasonable value. You could use the SB600 difused and some white card as a reflector I guess.

Can't comment Azz as I don't know (OK that has not stopped me in the past) I use some old lights we used to use for Video and I bounce them off the walls or ceiling so proper kit is outside my experience.

Azz, how much do you anticipate using your lighting equipment? I believe you mentioned you already have an sb600 flash. Check out http://www.abetterbouncecard.com/ before buying anything please.

Re: Studio Lighting - is this kit any good?

I don't have a flash yet Bob - was just wondering how they'd differ I don't think I'd be using it too much, hence the £50 price tag seemed attractive

Thanks for the info BC + Snapper. Yeah, they do seem pretty well priced I may just go for them and a nifty fifty

Re: Studio Lighting - is this kit any good?

yes they do look good.

I have e mailed a buyer who bought this item in australia to see what he thought.

Let you all know what the reply is as soon as I receive it.

I am hoping he says it was a good hassle free purchase.
