Aperture - Shutter - Manual (Feedback Please)

Today has been a lovely sunny day here. So this morning I took the plunge and came out of my cameras auto and sports mode.
I have been reading and watching videos so far on Apature and Shutter.

I and filled the bird station up. Set up my camera on a tripod and sat on a garden chair.

Please tell me honestly what I am doing right and wrong.

If you agree with someone then let me know. More help the better here please.

First of all I had a go in Apature mode. I thought I'd try where you get the background blurry.

1.

2.

Next I went for Shutter mode. Trying to get the birds as they are just about to land on the feed tray.

3.

4.

5.

I'd been doing these for a few hours and thought I'd give Manual mode ago.

8.

There was of course many outtakes and mistakes but we don't talk about those

This is my first attempt away from auto mode. Please post what you really think. Good and bad. I need to learn what I am doing right and wrong.

Please don't go to deep on the jargon or I'll just be asking, what's that

Re: Aperture - Shutter - Manual (Feedback Please)

Looking good to me.

Aperture Priority Mode = where your required depth of field is the key criteria so you set it and let the camera choose the shutter speed required to achieve the correct exposure. In the first two you've managed the shallow dof that you've aimed for and the resulting shutter speed has suited the subject.

Shutter Priority Mode = where your required shutter speed (fast or slow) is the key criteria so you set it and let the camera choose the aperture size required to achieve the correct exposure. In the bird shots you've got them sharp with some nice wing movement so again thumbs up.

Remember - As per your flying bird thread - there's another variable (ISO) which you can take control of to influence what the camera gives you in terms of the 'other' value in the above two modes.

Manual Mode = you balance shutter speed against aperture against ISO to get the correct exposure. The key here is to have the right balance to suit the subject.

All in all a good set and good examples of when to adopt what settings.

Re: Aperture - Shutter - Manual (Feedback Please)

Cheers Phil for that. It helps a great deal. Normally every time I learn something it pushes the last thing out. Not much storage space you see lol.
ISO and how they go with the others will be the next step after more practice.
When I had it in manual I had the iso on auto.

Re: Aperture - Shutter - Manual (Feedback Please)

These are some nice images to practice the various modes. They look well focussed and you can see the various modes in action. 6 has the subject matter underexposed, the meter is reading the background which is brighter... you may adjust to read the subject matter but that may blow the highlights in the background... sometimes you have to move. This was a good exercise to learn your camera, but it may well be a good idea to look through nature orientated pictures on websites etc. so you also get the right angles and poses that tend to make the birds look attractive and natural.

I can see what you mean in the squirrel Cakey. How do I stop that from happening?
