Hi Mossy ( that is definitely not a well chosen nick name under the circumstances )
I am connected to the glass trade so I have a knowledge of silica beads , they will not work as you are suggesting , but would work in a pelican case ( as it is sealed ) until it is opened again , depending on the amount of moisture .
The sure fire way is the expensive route of a dry cabinet , which has been recommended to me , when I move to Thailand .
Hope this helps , I didn't want you to think your gear was safe when it isn't .

I've a couple lenses with this problem :/ which is highly annoying - can't afford to do anything with them at the moment though
