Getting to Know YOu! (Steve)

Hi Yoppers!

Welcome to this new feature - "Getting to Know Yo!"

Each month we will be interviewing a YOP member and posting that interview for the interest of all - we hope you like this feature and will participate if asked...

Our first interview was conducted with SteveL - Thank you Steve! I'm sure our members will find it interesting and will now know what makes you tick a little better.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

YOP: Hi Steve, how did you get involved in photography?

Steve: As a child I had a fascination for photography and actually got my first camera when I found a ten bob note (50p in today’s money) and rode my pushbike to Bournemouth to buy a camera

YOP: What in your opinion creates a great image?

Steve: An image that intrigues or makes me think. It must still draw me into it after the initial reaction to the image. Many seemingly very good images can give one an initial rush but then fails to deliver any further. I like an image that forces me to look at the image again and again.

YOP: Who, if anyone has inspired you - photography or just generally?

Steve: I cannot say any one photographer has inspired me but there are many that I admire and wish I could produce images in the same vein as them. If I were forced to name a photographer it would be Martin Parr or Diane Arbus. I just love their approach to photography.

YOP: Which type of photography do you find most enjoyable, and why?

Steve: Action photography of dogs particularly gundogs. I seem to have an affinity with them and enjoy watching them and trying to predict what they are going to do next. If I get an image that portrays just a bit of the personality of a dog, I am well pleased.

YOP: Which type of photography do you find most challenging, and why?

Steve: Landscape or people photography fill me with dread. Landscape because I find I have too much time to think about the image and then start to doubt there is a decent image there in the first place. People photography is difficult for me because I don’t think I am good working with people. However, I have a helped pro wedding ‘tog a few times and he tells me I am very good at getting people to do my bidding. I think it’s a confidence thing, the lack of it.

YOP: What's your personal fave photograph?

Steve: One of my favourite image has got to be Martin Parr’s image of a woman and two children stood outside a chip shop with litter all around them. Screams seedy, poor and hopelessness to me.

YOP: What camera/lenses do you use most of all?

Steve: Canon 40D & 5D get equal use but I have to admit that I get more enjoyment out of using the 5D. Can’t explain why, it just seems to instil a more relaxed mood when I am using it. Lens wise, I think I use the 70 – 200mm a lot.

YOP: Thank you Steve!
