Filters

I'm looking to get some basic filters for my canon 18-55mm standard lens, and i wondered if anyone could advice me on ok (but while i'm just starting off) not overly expensive brands to fit my lens.

Plus, what thread size and fitting type would fit my lens..

Thank you
Andrea

Re: Filters

Thread size is 58mm

As for what filters you need, only you can decide that, but most people would have the following:

ND 2/4/8
Circular Polariser
+1 +2 +4 closeup
grey grad

Re: Filters

The other filters you may wish to try are neutral density graduated (ND Grad) filters.

These are dark at the top and clear at the bottom - their purpose is to retain detail in the sky without affecting the ground. They also allow you to use slower shutter speeds for the ground (think of waves on a beach) without the sky being over exposed.

A 'soft' ND Grad filter blends softly so is suitable when you have a horizon that may include buildings, trees or hills. A 'hard' ND Grad filter has a very sudden change so is suitable for a very level horizon such as seascapes. A typical set of ND Grads consists of 3 filters of differing strengths.

They are held in a filter holder which is attached to the front of the lens. Unlike round filters which screw directly onto the front of the lens they can be slid up or down so the dark / clear part suits where you place the horizon.

I purchaced HiTech grads, Cokin Holder, with Kood adaptor rings.

The Kood adaptor rings are much cheaper, than Cokin and do the same job.
The Cokin holder is much cheaper than the Hitech holder and again does the same job. The Hitech grads are excellent and seem more 'neutral' than Cokin so don't affect colour.

You can get the Hitech filters from Teamwork Digital

You get get the Cokin holder and Kood adaptor rings from Premier Inks
