A Ducklings tale

Woke up this morning to find one of the mallards {wild} who visits regular had turned up with her new brood in tow, a neighbours cat was circling the pond {i say pond, but it's really just a muddy puddle at the moment, I am still waiting for hubby to repair it} Mrs Mallard was trying to see the cat off and was really giving the cat some grief, but to no avail. So i charged out in my dressing gown to chase the cat off,

Then i took some photo's {like you do, still in my dressing gown}

Only to realize that Mrs Mallard could get out of the pond, but not the babies, so there i am dressing gown and wellies {not a pretty sight for the postman}, collecting ducklings, i got them all reunited with mum and thought my good deed was done for the day,

But oh no, a couple of hours later i went out into the garden only to find Mrs Mallard had gone off and left two little ones behind, so then i spent several hours trying to find her, without any luck,

I was hoping that she would return, so i could reunite the family, in the past i have found duckling in my garden and have managed to reunite them, but it hasn't happen, the two babies are safe and cosy under their heat lamp and are eating and drinking ok, so it looks like i have more new additions to our ever growing family.

The family before she lost two

The two little ones she left behind

Then this evening on my usual dog walking trip, I saw the neighbours cat with a duckling in it's mouth oh mother nature can be so cruel, at least this pair of duckling will survive to fight another day
