International Broadcasters Show.

It's where all the companies involved in Broadcasting show off their kit. I like going to the Canon and Sony stand and playing with their Television cameras They set up studios and have people acting or presenting and you can film them, lol its good fun.

Unfortunately most of my week will be spend installing all the equipment in the stand for the company I work for. But I am sure I will find some time to play

Anyone and everyone involved in Satellite/Cable/DVB-H Freeview and IPTV will there. All the big players like Sky, Microsoft, NTL, Apple etc will be showing off their stuff.

My personal favorite last time was HDTV-2 its 4 times the resolution of HDTV and looks amazing.

I personally am not too bothered about specs, hope they don't put that idiotic live view or face recognition on it though.

Hi Alan. Can you tell me what is idiotic about the "live view" function on a DSLR?, have you ever tried using it? I find that a bold statement coming from someone that does not even have the function on there DSLR!.

I find live view to be invaluable for landscapes, nightshots and astrophotography, especially when using manual focus and having the ability to zoom in on the subject 10X for precise focus. It's also very useful for framing low angle tripod shots from awkward positions. There is a grid overlay that can help with compositioning as well.

I had a 'live view' equivalent on an older camera that I had. So yes, I do know how it works, and I do 'have it'. So no, it wasn't a bold statement from someone that does not have that function. It was an opinion from someone that does.

I find the fairly expensive piece of glass they traditionally give you to look through to be fairly good for framing/focussing shots. Also, the viewfinder is much better in bright sunlight as the LCDs can be very hard to see.

I really don't need 4 white lines to help me compose, and anyone buying a camera at the kind of level I am talking about (serious enthusiast upwards) wouldn't need them either.

Live View, and some of the other pointless nonsense that is creeping in to DSLRs (face recognition! are we not supposed to be able to do something as fundamental as recognise a face?) is detracting from other features that could be in the body. I find it annoying that things that are not really that useful are taking R&D time, and also adding to the cost of the camera.

You might think live view is useful, that is fine, that is 'your' opinion, and that is fine. I personally think it is a pointless (on a serious SLR) waste of money that could be used to develop useful applications on the camera (like showing hyperfocal distances or an ISO priority mode or even including wireless as standard). Although Live View doesn't quite top the most useless ever feature that is the 'direct print button'

To be honest, I don't really get why it is so used on P&S cameras either, using the LCD at arms length (we have all seen people doing it) does not promote good photo taking. You get extra shake, photos are crooked, it eats batteries etc.

I hope you now understand my annoyance with live view, the space and time could have been better spent by Canon.

You say you had a "live view equivalent" on an older camera, but you don't mention what camera or type. I'm guessing it was a point and click with a very small low resolution screen. I'm not talking about old point and click cameras you might have used with a low resolution screen, I'm talking about modern DSLR's with live view. Namely, the 40d. So, no, I don't believe you know how it works, or it's many uses. As I have already said, it's invaluable in certain shooting situations while mounted on a tripod for low light, studio portrait, macro and astrophotography.

"I really don't need 4 white lines to help me compose, and anyone buying a camera at the kind of level I am talking about (serious enthusiast upwards) wouldn't need them either."

The grid lines are black actually. I'd disagree, I think some people will find the grid overlay handy for keeping the horizon straight.

Here are some more uses for live view

LV Exposure Simulation - show real time brightness with LV on
Info on LV screen

Press INFO button while LV is on 1 push gives you shooting info. 2 Pushes gives you all of 1 push + style mode and battery life. RGB Histogram is also possible with C.Fn IV-7 enabled.

With LV on, you can zoom in 5X and 10X by hitting the magnifying glass button once or twice. This is very useful for manual focusing on an object.

With LV on, the joy stick will allow you to set focus box off centre - Centre Box will also show exposure as it moves.

With LV on, DOF button works in LV. This is great is you have C.Fn IV-7 disabled.

With LV on, AE Lock and FE Lock button works

LV can be used "live" via a computer connection with supplied Canon Software

LV works with TC-80N3 / RS-80N3 / 60 T3 cable switches

SILENT MODE - (pg. 106 & 113) Discusses the 3 Silent modes (flash and fps) for LV. This is important for non-Canon off shoe flash firing.

The little 4-way button can also move that enlarged focus area, if you want to set the focus somewhere off centre.

How can you say it's useless nonsense when you have never used it on a modern Canon DSLR?. If you don't use a tripod with your type of photography, then I could understand why it would not be quite as useful for you.

BTW the £6000 eos-1ds MKIII has live view, I wonder how many MKIII owners think it's useless nonsense.

Re: Canon 5D replacement

I just checked the Photokina dates.

23rd to 28th Sept.

That seems a bit odd if this 'alleged' NDA runs out on the 18th. That leaves a 5 day gap between the end of the NDA and the start of the show.

So either Canon are going to announce it before the show (seems odd, as it would be their biggest announcement this half of the year) or (and this has been muted in a few forums) they are not ready, and will make no announcement

General feeling is there is still one more body to come this year, but no one knows which range the new body will be in. (Although we can rule out the XX range and a new low cost body (1000D)).

Re: Canon 5D replacement

Other rumour sites are now saying that 21Mpix will be the magic number for the 5D replacement. No official word on whether we are talking about a 5Dmk11 or a 3D/7D.

The same sites predicted 15Mpix for the 50D, so they must be getting this info from somewhere.
