Florida Swamps

Taken Sunday...so good to see the water back after the long, long dry spell. The trees are Cypress and the knobs that poke up are part of them...they make furniture wood from them and squirrels eat the covering off of them. The trees have lovely ferny soft leaves that turn reddish brown in the fall and drop off, starting over in the early spring with a lovely shade of green...so the trees are pretty all year. Florida law protects these trees but does allow some harvesting of mature trees....the places where they grow is being lost to developments all over the state. While a gator can be found in there it is not their favorite place..they prefer more open, sunny places like marshes, ditches and ponds. Sometimes I see wading birds there but not often. Are there swamps like this in the UK? Shirley

Re: Florida Swamps

Hi Shirley,

There used to be extensive swamps in England in former times.
But most of those (if not all) have been drained or reclaimed.
There are smaller swamps, found around the margins of ponds and lakes, although the 'proper' name now is wetlands, but they are nothing compared to Florida, Georgia and Louisiana.

But whatever small swamps you will find in England, there will not be alligators, venomous snakes etc, but the mosquitoes will be there in big numbers in summer.

Re: Florida Swamps

Because of all the rain we have had its quite swampy by our standards , but nothing quite like this. Quite primeval looking habitat.

Re: Florida Swamps

I came home with the car full of mosquitos! A shot of Raid took care of them. Sometimes the windows were dark with them! Kept the AC and fan on high to keep them off me. Shirley
