It's an old model Bazza - not expensive - swapped it for a couple of EFS lenses that I was wanting to shift. Being in great nick and with a low shutter count I thought it worth a punt to cover the faster stuff if I go full frame. The rear screen is a bit old school but that's fine - it's weather sealed - built like a tank - 45 point focus - 8.5 f/ps - and should be good for printing up to A3.

By Christmas I'll decide on this or my 40D and keep one of them. It's just a different kind of camera and I'll enjoy learning the ropes and mucking about with it which is what it's all about at the end of the day.

KenTT has newer versions (1D Mark III and 1DS Mark III) so may elaborate more on this but In simple terms Canon's pro 1D series come in two variations.

The 1Ds models are full frame - squillions of MP - landscape and still image camera.

The 1D models are 1.3 crop (sensor size between FF and 1.6 crop) less MP but faster - aimed more at photojournalists, sports and wildlife.
Hi Phil

Sorry for late reply also I've just sent my congrats in your 40D focus comparison thread as I didn't notice this post.

Yes you are correct about the 1Ds series being all full frame and the 1D series being 1.3 crop, although the later is designed more for speed and sports shooting but it still makes a good all round camera.

I've sometimes used the 1D instead of the 1Ds becuase the 1D has a faster flash sync speed than the 1Ds.

You will enjoy using it Phil and the degree of tweaking in all those custom menu settings, its a fiddlers paradise

Re: New Camera

Tell me about the fiddling !

I know people say 'shoot manual' but this camera seems to have every single setting known to man made available to adjust manually.

The 40D 50D 5D 7D 5DII all seem quite similar in the way they operate and moving between them is fairly intuitive but this is so alien to me. That said - two days of shooting and I'm getting the hang of it.
