yes that what im thinking. ireally wanted it for portrait photos.

but i also really want to get he hang of manual focusing so all round its a winner and a learning curve

I love my 50mm, but mines on a canon so AF I would say try it on manual, you'll get a better sense of achievement in your shots.

It should be fine for any distance really after all it's 'closer' than a 35mm camera which is fine for non close ups.

As for the subjects - it should be fine for still and moving. With a nice wide 1.8 aperture (letting lots of light in) you should be able to shoot faster shutter speeds at the correct exposure.
