Re: Experimenting with desaturating colours

Judging from the light I think that this may be more a case of camera shake causing the softness rather than just not focused properly.

Were they natural light shots as the look, if so what was the shutter speed and focal length?

Re: Experimenting with desaturating colours

Nice pictures indeed. Lovely composition and great subjects.

Perhaps consider using a tripod low down if you want to try and negate that softness - although its not a major drama.

I did use a tripod so probably not focused!

Light through open front door - which is why they were looking that way.
Don't know what shutter speed is yet.
Is focal length to do with Depth of Field? If it is I think it was at 14 - not for any good reason, thats just where it was.

Re: Experimenting with desaturating colours

Shutter speed is the speed at which the shutter is fired Focal length is the length that the lens was at when you took the shot - so if you've a non zoom (prime) lens of say... 105mm then the focal length is always 105mm. If you have an 18-55mm zoom lens then your focal length will be somewhere between 18 and 55mm.

Re: Experimenting with desaturating colours

I think the point Stanokella was trying to make is the shutter speed should ideally be at least 1.5X the speed of the focal length to ensure a sharp image.

Re: Experimenting with desaturating colours

No idea what any of that means yet! I'll go and look at my camera and see if I can work it out.
I have a lens that can go in and out but never noticed numbers.
As for shutter speed, haven't spotted that at all on my camera yet.
Thanks for all the input. I'm learning loads.

Re: Experimenting with desaturating colours

I think they work really well.

I never really do it but I quite like it when colour is toned down.

Desaturating just one colour can also create nice effects.
