When you post photos on the forum...

What kind of comments are you generally looking for?

Do you post:
  • To get a critique - all of the time? Most of the time?
  • To get general comments on the technical aspect?
  • Just to share - ie simply get general comments?
  • Welcome any type of comment/critique?
  • Other? (Please say!)

I was thinking about this, and how we could simply specify in our profile what kind of comments we generally look for - then display a key with our posts, eg level 1/2/3/4 etc. So only those wanting a critique get one, those who want general photo related comments get those, and those who just want to share don't have to get them. Just an idea!

Re: When you post photos on the forum...

I generally seek comments mainly to get an idea how a picture could be improved or to get a general opinion if people see things I don't see. Some I post so people can just have a look what I am up to being as it is a photography forum although appreciated many aren't interested! I mean this in the nicest way though, but I am pretty much sure that of the 15-20 people who contribute to this forum my type of photography only appeals to maybe half that. That's fair enough, in general I don't tend to look at dog or animal pictures particularly and I'm sure we all have our preferences.

To be honest I think the categories are easy enough to work although I do notice quite a number of people post as showcase>opinions whereas I tend to post for critique.

Anyway, gotta go, pub beckons...

Re: When you post photos on the forum...

I have only just joined, but what i was hoping for from the forum I suppose, was to get a general critique and comment on my pictures and pick up hints and tips on how to improve my own photography and pick up some hints and techniques for how others have achieved their photographs.

I have a lot to learn about pictures and really wanted some constructive criticism, advice, hints and tips

As far as a photography showcase.. Not so much.. I have Flickr for that, I was more hoping for this forum to be more critical than that.

Re: When you post photos on the forum...

I'm happy to receive whatever I get to be honest.

As for the catergories....

* To get a critique - all of the time? Most of the time?
* To get general comments on the technical aspect?
* Just to share - ie simply get general comments?
* Welcome any type of comment/critique?
* Other? (Please say!)

If I post in the 'showcase' then I do like comments on the technical aspect (2) although if people do a critique (1) then all the better.

If I post in the 'Not for Critique' section then I 'just want to share (3) as I know fine well there's a million things that could make them better. A simple "I like that" or "great colours" type of comment is nice. Sometimes in this section I'll post something because I want to share what's in the photo rather than the photo itself.

What I would say about 'showcase' is I wouldn't ask for anything by way of feedback that alienates folk from making a reply. If people feel they have to give technical feedback or a crit then they may choose not to make a reply which is a shame if they just want to say that they like what you've done.

PS

Enjoy your pint BC - or is it a nip ?

Re: When you post photos on the forum...

Primarily I post to share a great experience. I also appreciate comments that suggest improvements I might make. An example would be the leveling of shots involving the horizon, or increasing contrast to add punch. I'm not too old to learn so tell me the truth. Sometimes I have no control over a situation when it comes to composition, background or foreground. I not only want to hear improvements but what is it that you like about my photos.

I've been spreading my wing in my departure from portrait & wedding photography. I now love landscapes, shoreline shots, pets & flowers. I'm getting better at macro photography and love the control possible with still life.

I don't know it all but am willing to learn & try other areas of photography. I know a fair amount about flash photography yet seldom use flash except as fill light you all seldom notice. Thanks for your comments. I hope my being part of Yop has been beneficial to the forum.

Re: When you post photos on the forum...

I don't mind what feedback I get, any is better than none nothing worse than thousands of views and one comment, it means it must suck, but nobody will tell you why???

If I don't want any crit, then I post in Not for Critique.

TBH I forget to use the little labels anyway, so don't go confusing me, by adding more Azz!

S xx

Re: When you post photos on the forum...

Any comment would be nice but I hope for a something helpful.

Think all the different labels are confusing and think others like myself are put off commenting in any negative way, and you find yourselves looking for a sentence to sugar the pill or excusing your opinion as being personal and possibly not to be considered. Well it should be personal and all opinion should be considered if you are interested in making an image people want to look at.

I am able to be open and honest else where so I can only think the restriction I feel on here is all the labels and restrictions. An image may grab you and you wish to add a comment but before you do you have to go look to see what was required and what the rules are, so you don't bother.
