Re: Hama Star 42 or Hama Star 75 Tripod?

Azz - there's no substitute for weight.

Unless you are (and trust me on this one) climbing mountains - you want a good heavy solid tripod.

A good tip (if you go for a light one) is to put a string loop around the base and hang something heavy off it.

Also - if you find things a bit flimsy - use your timer so you're not moving the camera as you take your shot.

Re: Hama Star 42 or Hama Star 75 Tripod?

Azz,

I have the hama star 61. I had it when i had my last compact. It also did the job for me and my D50, i did have to tighten everything up a bit when i had the 70-300 lens on it... I'm yet to try my heavier d80 on it... It does ( and i think a lot of hama's do) have a quick release plate, so if you need the camera quick for the db9 you can hear coming round the corner, you just pull the lever and its off. They are lightweight (good for me I as i do a fair bit of walking with mine) but the two you mentioned may like mine, have the hook for adding weights.

If your budget can't stretch to one of the more expensive brands, and you have a choice between a hama or nothing... spending £15-£20 isn't a bad move. There's even a new star 75 on ebay at the moment for <£12 including postage

You could always sell it with your d40 if you upgrade.
