Re: nikon 50mm AF-S f/1.4

I don't take any notice of Ken R. nor do many others from what I understand.
There is only one true perfect picture and thats the one the photographer is happy with, not what others think, that is just a bonus.
You can be taken in with so called expert "pixel peepers" who spend more time testing what a bit of camera equipment is or is not capable of under lab condition and not used in the real world.

Suze. I'm not an expert on Nikon lens and don't now which will and which will not autofocus on your camera.

However if a lens I wanted showed considerable barrel distortion whilst it's cheaper sibling was less prone, then I would opt for the cheaper one.

Another thing to consider is the fact that at f1.4 even on a 50mm lens, the depth of focus will be minimal which would mean that one would have to absolutely spot with the focusing. There is no room for error at all.

The difference between a f2.8 and a f1.8 lens is very close to 2 stops whereas the difference between f1.8 and f1.4 is only 1 stop. Personally I do not think the higher price is justified for the difference in stops let alone the fact the f1.4 suffers from barrel distortion.

Re: nikon 50mm AF-S f/1.4

Suze - like some of the guys have said, try increasing your ISO first and experiment with that as it'll allow you faster shutter speeds with your current lens

New lenses won't be some miracle fix where all your photos automatically start coming out like the pros you need to understand how photography/the camera works - and then you'll be able to adjust your camera to get the best out of whichever lens you have

Re: nikon 50mm AF-S f/1.4

Baz, try taking a photo with a straight edge (lampost, flagpole or similar) towards the edge of the image with a lens that shows barrel distortion and you wil see that it is not just a theoretical problem only evident to pixel peepers in the lab.

I have seen many images spoilt by bendy brickwork or roof-lines caused by such lenses

Here is an image taken with said lens and even with my dodgy eyes I can see the barrel distortion

Agree with bazza re: Ken R.

Biased advice as he's paid with freebies, advertising etc.

Most of his advice is crap imo.

Steve you left out the line above the picture quote " Distortion: modest barrel distortion (<1%). A bit high for a normal prime, but not enough to really worry about." unquote

Back to Suze's dilemma, I think Azz's advice is right for a beginner like you.

If you haven't got the basics sorted then no matter how much you spend, the pictures still won't come out right.
Take time to perfect your technique before spending any more money.
It might be you need to practice away from the arena for now as they are challenging conditions - even for more experienced togs. You could dim the lights in your house and practice nailing exposure and focus. Also practice getting the focus right in fast moving things outside. Then go back to the arena and apply what you have learned.

yeahi agree - great advice - will practise in a bit - just ten times harder as the dogs are moving pretty quick. Will have a go - if i go tonight - then see how they turn out.

Even if they are all rubbish i will post a couple for advice

Re: nikon 50mm AF-S f/1.4

change of plan...

i really want (and actually need not just for agility)..) a 1.4 and work have been nice to me this month so i can afford one

so for now i will get a 50mm 1.4 .... and in about 5 weeks If needed - will get a longer lense (save up again )

Any reccomended places to buy - preferably people you have dealt with - i only want new with warranty?
