Of course, for indoor agility etc - it would be no good as Azz has said, you'll need to be pretty close.

I'd go for a Nikon 18-105mm VR lens i have as a general walkabout lens. Even down at f3.5 or so, with the right iso setting, indoor fast photography should be perfectly achievable.

Example :

Has Nikon's VR too - so zoomed in it will stabilise for you too. Check out my flickr stream - most pics are taken with that lens.
Sorry have to disagree I have no barrel distortion from my 50mm f1.4 lens or none that I have noticed, but then I havn't had hands on with the f1.8 version to do a comparison. Don't know but there may be a difference between the D80 and the D300 nikon cameras that makes the difference

Re: nikon 50mm AF-S f/1.4

My experience has shown it to be prevelant.

And others too throughout the net.

f1.4 on left, f1.8 on right. It's slight, but enough to make me not want one.

Either way 50mm is not long enough imo for the application required here.

Re: nikon 50mm AF-S f/1.4

those 2 examples are taken with a Canon camera and what appears to be a canon lens.
Thats why I don't want to go over to the "dark " side

Found one.

I agree, tis a small amount but it's sill there and it annoys me as i like to shoot buildings etc. Which have a lot of lines. It probably wouldn't affect horses as much

Pity we don't live closer together Chris (Manguish) we could do fantastic comparison checks

Re: nikon 50mm AF-S f/1.4

thanks for the replies

I could work - short term - with a 50mm....

may seem false economy buying a 50mm lense only to upgrade later but its do-oable....problem is at the moment im waiting for money (student loan lol) to be deposited in my bank from september :o (2009)!!

until that arrives im very careful in case my doglet needs more ££ chucking her way - so the money in the bank is ''hers''....

the lense i showed on the last page(i think) £109.... that no good? or isit just cause its 50mm?

Re: nikon 50mm AF-S f/1.4

Is it manual? The one you linked to at Jessops says it has auto focus.
If its manual focus I am guessing that as a beginner you could struggle - especially as focus has already been causing you some issues.
