After the rain - Torquay Pier

Was around the south Devon coast for a few days, and got caught in a rain shower near Torquay pier one afternoon.

The picture isn't too far from natural. I'd highly recommend the Tamron SP lens as a good budget walkwabout lens if you have full frame and don't mind a slightly slower and variable aperture. I love that lens, it is absolutely pin sharp but you may have trouble finding one. It's lighter than my Nikon 28 to70 f2.8 and has a bit more range. Also here used the Hoya pro 1 polariser.

Constructive comments, opinions welcome. The clouds are slightly blown, but the lighting was incrediably contrasty.

PS. Seem to be finding Photobucket is softening pictures. I upload at 800 pixels the same as here but seem to end up with softer images. The original of this is pin sharp.

Re: After the rain - Torquay Pier

Oh wow! I love this!
I love the feeling of the brightness.
I adore the reflection of the sky.
The simplicity of the range of colours works so well.
Its a shame about the clouds being blown but it doesn't detract too much for me!

Re: After the rain - Torquay Pier

It's a good image BC. I think a Polarising filter would have helped with the reflections and certainly would have helped with the detail in the sky. I'm also wondering if a different composition would have worked better (easier said than done, I know) e.g portrait orientation and/or a much lower angle i'e camera tilted downward with 1/4 sky.
I would have also tried to avoid having the boat masts to the left included in the image, either by zooming in or repositioning myself.

Re: After the rain - Torquay Pier

Thanks both. Funnily enough DJ I have a whole series of images including several in portrait orientation, and some with the masts out of shot. I will consider your ideas and see if i have one that fots the bill a little better. I am using a polariser in this shot.

Re: After the rain - Torquay Pier

Really ,really good, echo Em and Phil, it's fab enough that the blown cloud doesn't detract too much, and it would be sooo good in Mono, love the composition, and the reflections on the Pier.

Re: After the rain - Torquay Pier

I love it - and I don't think I'd like it in mono, as I just *love* the colours as they are now! I also really like the diagonals you've got going on there too Great image!

Re: After the rain - Torquay Pier

Love the perspective and composition on this one BC. At least it's easy to get the horizon correct with all those vertical poles.
