Who'd have thought - Sony at number one?

Well who'd have thought Sony would have the best selling DSLR right now?

Amazon have been showing the Sony DSLR-A200K as their number one best seller for a while now - not surprising at £270 plus a further £30 cashback.

Sony seem to be very serious about the DSLR market.. further down the charts is their Sony DSLRA350K - selling better than the Nikon D90 and Canon 40D!! Again not surprising given its only £350 after £50 cashback.

Now all they need are some top end Carl Zeis lens!

So what do you think of Sony's comeback stroke attempt at getting more market share in the DSLR market? Reckon it will last? Are they ones to look out for in the coming years?

Re: Who'd have thought - Sony at number one?

Hi Azz, I'm not suprised. They have discounts everywhere, advertising and many stockists. The Sony's offer good value for money and a quality product at a keen price. I bet a large proportion of buyers are new DSLR owners tempted by these and won't be thinking about 'a system' camera or the secondhand market. Shown in a shop many people will be thinking 'that's good enough for me' and of course they are. Nikon though remains in the eyes of many a brand to aspire to and I know a few people happy to get their hands on a D40 and feel they have 'a real serious camera' which of course it can be. Personally I do think cameras like the D300/D700 remain over-priced and £100-150 discount on new would be more suitable in current climate and when compared to offerings from Canon/Sony etc.

And again a lot of people have good and happy experience of the Sony video cameras so why wouldn't they be happy to by a DSLR of the same make.

Re: Who'd have thought - Sony at number one?

The a350 always has good reviews, and for the price they are supposed to be excellent value. I couldn't decide between the Oly and Sony for ages. Maybe if I had gone for Sony , I wouldn't be changing brands?

The new a900, looks a beast of a camera, and though it is about two grand for a body, I bet the price drops quicker than a Canon or Nikon would too. All the shots I have seen on here and elsewhere by Sony cameras have been great.

So I think they are well priced, and seem to produce excellent images, plus their lens range seems to be getting much bigger, I have noticed them always displayed in good positions with cash back deals too.

The sony a900 has already dropped about a £100, so you get a Full frame camera, that is 24 mp for under £2000,plus some places offer cash back, so I can totally understand why people are snapping them up.

I reckon their next-gen cams will be the ones to look out for too.

I hope they gain market-share, as then hopefully that'll push Nikon and Canon to put image stablisation into the body too (still do stablised lens too, but let us decide which we want to go for).

Re: Who'd have thought - Sony at number one?

Doesn't surprise me.

I read an article the other day about this. It talked about how DSLRs are now being bought by people that have no photography background but (quite rightly) trust SONY to deliver a quality product.

The 900 looks good and it will be great to see SONY getting into the pro camera market.

Re: Who'd have thought - Sony at number one?

Sony have been heavily discounting their kit to get market share. Sony's profits have however been dismal this year and this week Sony announced it was increasing prices (but didn't actually specify if this was across the board on in certain sectors)

I think their kit prices will start to fall in line with Canon and Nikkon now, (well after xmas).

Re: Who'd have thought - Sony at number one?

I would have thought they drop even further after xmas (January sales)... unless they are trying to grab just the xmas market.

Nice to see you back Alan - where you been!? Hope you got plenty of pics for us

Re: Who'd have thought - Sony at number one?

They always seem to have really good prominent displays in places like Jessops, with some great cashback promotions and things. Maybe they will just stop the special promotions?
