First shot with new DSLR

Hi,
As a newbie to a DSLR , I thought I would post this shot of a yellow hammer.
I took this through a window as sighting the bird left me no time to get in the open.
Not sure of the settings on the camera as I was just playing around with the manual mode. Guess the feathers, beak could be sharper and maybe needed to zoom in more?

Re: First shot with new DSLR

Yes it's a bit soft, and yes it could do with not being through a window - and a little closer may have helped with feather detail etc - but it's al ovely photo, especially for your first DSLR photo! And you are so lucky to have Yellowhammers, I'd love to see one!

Re: First shot with new DSLR

Not the most common of birds, so to get a picture of one is well worth some praise.
If wildlife is the photographic route you want to take then patience is one of the things you need.

I don't think there are many who are totally satisfied with the pictures they take no matter how good the photo.
You will always think, if I used this lens or that camera setting, or maybe I were in a better position, the picture would be better. So as long as you keep thinking that way you will improve in leaps and bounds.

I must take on board some of my own advice. Oh and welcome to the group I almost forgot

Re: First shot with new DSLR

We do not have birds that are so colourful with their wings down although the Green finch gives a beautiful flash of yellow when in flight.

That is a good through the window shot particularly if your windows are like mine and dog decorated, I find the only way is to focus manually not easy for me with my eyesight.

You have done a pretty good job on this one and would think you are pleased, now you will be fixated on trying to get that crisp, perfect shot of a Yellowhammer.

Good luck and welcome

The yellow hammer is a UK bird, not that common but still can be seen in the UK.

Re: First shot with new DSLR

Thanks for your welcomes and comments!
We are in a new build on the edge of a village and the yellow hammer has been a frequent visitor, along with chaffinch, greenfinch and another rarity the goldfinch, in the last week, maybe the breeding season has bought them into the feeders.
My interests lie with mostly anything from dogs, landscapes, wildlife and nature generally.
We are lucky being in Aberdeenshire having everything from sea to mountains and have wonderful views of Bennachie from our property.
I have not ventured from the house with my prized possession yet!
I hope to get a lot of fun out of the Canon and will post a few other shots that I have taken just to get some feedback on my start into a new venture.
By the way I am in awe of the photos that you ( collectively ! ) have taken, hope I can produce some stunning shots in the future

Cheers Elaine
